A while back, I wrote an article about Pokemon sizes. In Pokemon GO, two new sizes were added to a Pokemon’s potential stats: XXS or XXL. Pokemon that are XXS and XXL are, as the name suggests, extra extra small and extra extra large. Originally, these new sizes were only visible on a handful of Pokemon, but ever since I wrote the previous article, now any Pokemon can be extra big or extra small. Has anything really changed though?
Not really.
The little banners are still there, as are the little popups saying whether a Pokemon is tiny or huge. Heck, the UI for differently sized Pokemon hasn’t changed at all. The only thing that’s changed is how many Pokemon can be tiny or huge. Turns out, it’s pretty much every Pokemon. There’s evidence of tiny shinies and even a tiny Registeel caught via battling Giovanni. I’ve done Team Rocket fights where their middle or last Pokemon is extra large or extra small. Unlike shiny Pokemon, XXL and XXS Pokemon are rare but can be found on any species.
I like collecting them nonetheless.
So far, I’ve actually collected a few. When the feature came out, I only had one XXS Pokemon to begin with, an Ursaluna, and zero XXL Pokemon. Since then though, I have got abnormally sized Blitzle, Noibat, Noivern, Larvitar and Tyranitar. My favourite is my XXS Noibat, which does genuinely look tiny. What I love most though is how tiny some of these Pokemon get. The aforementioned Noibat is absolutely tiny. However the tiny Larvitar I have isn’t quite as noticeable. My XXL Blitzle has the same issue, and I don’t see Blitzle enough to properly compare sizes.
Of course, just like shinies, XXL and XXS are random, but I think the XXL/XXS ones are a little more common. Then again, considering I did a whole Community Day with Noibats, I ended up with 10 shinies, two XXS Noibats and a single XXL Noibat. So maybe they are more rare. Or maybe I just have a bad sample size.
Sadly, it’s not all good news. While huge and tiny Pokemon are cute, there’s no way to, well, show off how small they are. You have to slide left and right to compare sizes among the same species, but they’re not always noticeable. You can show off a huge or tiny Pokemon as your buddy, but there’s still no point of reference. Doesn’t help that Pokemon can be deceptively big or small when having them as your buddy, or have them roaming the world map.
What I’d also like though is for visible sizes to apply to all Pokemon. Not just XXL or XXS. A nice gradient of sizes, based on whether your Pokemon is normal, extra small or extra extra small, or large and extra extra large. It’s not a major complaint or anything, I just wish that scale was more of a gradient rather than just for the abnormal ones. Then again, since we don’t really get a good point of reference as it is, it’d be impossible to really tell anyway.
Still, I do like these huge and tiny Pokemon. It’s a small feature but I have always loved collecting little tiny things… Oh and big things as well, but let’s face it, a tiny Noibat is way cuter than a giant Noibat.
