Is the world count legit? ›

All the data used on TheWorldCounts is sourced from a large number of organisations, research institutions, news services etc. Our aim is to mainly use data from the world's most reputable organisations. Yet, to provide a broad picture of the world's challenges we also use data from a number of smaller organisations.

TheWorldCounts is based in Copenhagen, Denmark. The site is being run and continuously updated by Esben Larsen and Karsten Bjerring Olsen.

According to Professor Cribb, shortages of water, land, and energy combined with the increased demand from population and economic growth, will create a global food shortage around 2050.

Our World in Data has been cited in academic scientific journals, medicine and global health journals, and social science journals. The Washington Post, The New York Times, and The Economist have used Our World in Data as a source.

We must have food, water, air, and shelter to survive. If any one of these basic needs is not met, then humans cannot survive.

China overshot its sustainability limit and is responsible for 15% of global excess material use, while the rest of the “global south” (low-to-middle-income countries in Latin America and the Caribbean, Africa, the Middle East and Asia) was collectively responsible for 8%.

Looking farther into the future, other sources claim that things like aluminum might run dry in about 80 years. Other studies indicate that rhodium, followed by gold, platinum and tellurium, are some of the rarest elements in terms of their percentage in the planet's crust and their importance to society.

All in all, resources are not being depleted in the way that Ehrlich feared they would—as witnessed by the fact that humanity has not yet run out of a single supposedly nonrenewable resource. In fact, resources tend to become more abundant over time relative to the demand for them.

The current world population is 8,116,698,258 as of Friday, June 21, 2024 according to the most recent United Nations estimates elaborated by Worldometer.

Given a current global population of about 8 billion, the estimated 117 billion total births means that those alive in 2022 represent nearly 7% of the total number of people who have ever lived (see Table 2).

But by the 2030s, as temperatures rise, climate hazards are expected to increase all over the globe as different countries face more crippling heat waves, worsening coastal flooding and crop failures, the report says.

The resources that will be most scarce in the future, according to the report, are water, biodiversity and air, rare earth and metals, agriculture, waste disposal, processing power, youth, health and wellness, skills and education, and time.

The report warns that, by 2040, global temperatures are expected to rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, meaning that most people alive today will see the dramatic effects of climate change within their lifetime.

Water, air, and soil are three natural resources that we cannot live without. The Forest Service strives to protect, maintain, and restore these valuable assets now and into the future. Water is one of the most important natural resources flowing from forests.

Earth's population is growing very quickly, and with that growth comes a greater demand for the planet's natural resources. The resources most at risk of being depleted are minerals, oil, water, and forests.

Overconsumption means consuming resources that we cannot replenish or that cannot sustain themselves at the rate we are consuming them. Ecosystems are unable to cope with excessive resource extraction, resulting in biodiversity loss and the deterioration of the natural world.

Natural resources fall into three categories: perpetual renewable resources; intermediate renewable resources and non-renewable resources.
