Abstract

The Model of Personal Investment is presented as a motivational framework in which constructs from existing theories and models of motivation and health behavior are integrated into a comprehensive approach to explain and predict adolescent health-related behavior. In this model, the subjective meaning of a behavior is proposed as the critical determinant of an individual's personal investment or engagement in the behavior. Further, the subjective meaning of a behavior is viewed as the result of a complex interplay between factors related to the person, the environment and the behavior. This meaning is proposed to be comprised of the following six inter-related components: sense of self perceptions, personal incentives, perceived barriers, perceived options, perceived situational opportunities and perceived situational climate. These facets of personal investment meaning are believed to be on a person-to-environment continuum; the components of sense of self, personal incentives and perceived barriers are viewed as person-based whereas the facets of perceived situational opportunities and perceived situational climate are proposed to be environment-based. This continuum is believed to be mediated by the component of perceived options. The Model of Personal Investment has an ecological perspective which should allow for the delineation of the individual and environemental factors that comprise personal investment meaning and thereby function as the motivational determinants of adolescent health-related behavior. Delineation of the motivational determinants of adolescent health-related behavior should allow for the specification of individual and organizational factors fort the targeting of adolescent health promotion and education interventions.
