Confession: I don’t use a personal finance app to track my spending or net worth. For years, I’ve used a Google Sheets spreadsheet, and my only gripe was that I couldn’t easily track my net worth in real-time. That ended when I discovered GOOGLEFINANCE().
The formula returns the live price of a stock, mutual fund, ETF, or cryptocurrency. It can also give you historical prices, fund expense ratios, or number of outstanding shares with a few extra inputs. You can check out its full powers here.
In Excel: Yep, Excel can return stock prices, too. Enter each ticker in its own cell > Highlight the cells > Select “Data” > “Stocks” > Tap the square that appears above your first highlighted cell > Select the data point you want.
In Google Sheets: Type =GOOGLEFINANCE() into an empty cell with the ticker symbol in the parentheses. You can see in the GIF above that I reference a list of sample tickers and multiply the formula by the number of shares owned to sum the portfolio’s worth.
You can use the function like =qm_stream_last (“MSFT“) or =qm-stream_last(B2) where cell B2 is the one that contains the stock symbol. As soon as you do that, the stock prices will start showing in your Excel cell.

Real-time market data refers to the immediate and up-to-the-second information about the current state of financial markets, including stock prices, currency exchange rates, commodity prices, and other relevant data.
You can get stock and geographic data in Excel. It's as easy as typing text into a cell, and converting it to the Stocks data type, or the Geography data type. These two data types are considered linked data types because they have a connection to an online data source.
Under the Data tab in Excel, select From Web and select Advanced.
