What is the EXEC timeout in CCNA? ›

The Cisco 'exec-timeout' command sets a specific time to disconnect idle EXEC sessions. The default value for the EXEC timeout is 10 minutes. We can also specify a certain time by indicating how many minutes and seconds the idle EXEC session would run before it will timeout.

exec timeout command is used to specify the timeout for exec sessions [telnet/ssh] whereas session timeout command specifies the idle timeout period for all the sessions. The default exec timeout period is 10 mins.

By default, an IOS device will disconnect a console or VTY user after 10 minutes of inactivity. You can specify a different inactivity timer using the exec-timeout MINUTES SECONDS line mode command. To disable the timeout, use the value of 0 (not recommended in production environments!)

You can disable the EXEC timeout with either of the following commands: exec-timeout 0 0 or no exec-timeout. Don't despair, exec-timeout 0 1 is still available for messing with co-workers. Due to the goofy value ranges for this command, exec-timeout 1 30 is the same as exec- timeout 0 90.

Use the EXEC mode for setting, viewing, and testing system operations. In general, the user EXEC commands allow you to connect to remote devices, change terminal line settings on a temporary basis, perform basic tests, and list system information. The EXEC mode is divided into two access levels: user and privileged.

This means that on the console port will never timeout. The default for this command is exec-timeout 10 0 which means that the console line will logoff when inactivity at this line reaches 10 minutes.

The exec command is a powerful tool for manipulating file-descriptors (FD), creating output and error logging within scripts with a minimal change.

Session Timeouts

The session timeout is the maximum time for a client session to remain active before requiring reauthorization.

CommandTimeout = timeout ; Configures the time in seconds that a command will wait once you execute it. If the command hasn't completed once the timeout is reached, the attempt is aborted, and a provider-specific exception (such as SqlException or OleDbException ) is thrown. The default timeout is 30 seconds.

In a simple way of putting it, the exec-timeout will terminate an exec session after the session has been idle for the configured exec-timeout time. The default is 10 minutes. An absolute timeout however is a the maximum amount of time a single session can remain established.

What does command commandtimeout 0 mean? ›

A value of 0 indicates no limit (an attempt to execute a command will wait indefinitely).

It defines how many VTY's that are active on the device and essentially how many simultaneous remote connections you want to allow/support. In case of "line vty 0 4", you can have five simultaneous connections.

You also can press Ctrl-Z, or use the end command, from any configuration mode to return to privileged EXEC mode.

SESSION timeout is how long your TCP connection for SSH/TELNET will stay active before the Cisco device will disconnect the TCP connection.
