What is an ETF?
ETFs, also known as trackers, are funds that follow the performance of an index, commodity, bond or composition of products. Unlike some other funds, ETFs are bought and sold on a stock exchange. Would you like to learn more about ETFs? Read our ETF article. for all you need to know.
What is the S&P 500?
The S&P 500 tracks the 500 largest US companies. The index is the most popular and widely followed stock index worldwide. It’s issued by Standard and Poor's, a major US credit rating agency. Abbreviated, this credit rating agency is called S&P, hence the name.
The composition of the S&P 500 is decided by the 'S&P Index Committee', a committee from Standard and Poor's. This committee periodically determines which companies are included in the index. In doing so, they follow a set policy. Companies must meet the following conditions:
- The company is traded on the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) or the NASDAQ.
- The company's market capitalisation is greater than or equal to $14.6 billion.
- At least 50% of the shares are publicly traded.
- The liquidity of the company's shares is high.
- The operating income for the last four quarters is positive.
Why invest in S&P 500 ETFs?
The S&P 500 index can help indicate the health of the US economy. Currently, the economy in the US is the largest economy in the world. The US is expected to remain a key player on the world stage for decades to come.
Historical data shows that the S&P 500 has grown significantly over the past decades. Although some years have seen negative returns, the index shows long-term growth. Investors with a long-term strategy, may consider adding an S&P 500 ETF to their portfolio.
