Texas: the state where you’re most likely to be killed by animals (1)

To preface this post about how Texas is the state in which you’re most likely to be killed by an animal, we should note that death by animals is extremely unlikely in the United States.

If you were to account for all deaths by all animals, it wouldmake up just 0.008 percent of all deaths each year in the United States. In Texas, you are 10 times more likely to be killed in a car accident.

Yet we couldn’t overlook the fact that Texas was shaded dark red for danger on every single map the Washington Post published yesterday about the states with the highest rates of mortality by dogs, bees, snakes, spiders and other bugs and mammals.

Using data from the CDC between 1999 and 2013, the Washington Post found that 356 Texans died by an animal’s hand (and by that,we mean hoof, stinger, claws— you get the picture).

That number is far higher than any other state; the second highest recorded number at 212 came from California. The numbers for California and Texas are predictably higher than that of other states — 85 percent of states posted numbers under 100 — because of their respective greater size and population.

That being said, the Washington Post noted that Texas’ number of animal deaths is still considereddisproportionate to its population when put againstthe national average.

As for which animals are most likely to be the ones that kill you, according to the CDC, “other mammals” accounted for as much as 36 percent of all animal-related deaths in the United States between 1999 and 2013.

The south central region containing Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas and Oklahoma sees the most number of deaths within this category, which the Washington Post identified as mostly constituted by cows, horses and other farm animals.

Side note: A CDC report from the mid-2000s named cows, which kill an average of 20 people each year, the animal most likely to kill you in the United States. Yes, this means cows are technically 20 times as lethal as sharks.

But the number oneanimal killers on an annual basis are, perhaps unsurprisingly, bees, wasps and hornets. Roughly 58 die each year, mostly from anaphylactic shock.

The south central region containing Texas also had the second highest rates of deaths by snakes, dogs, spiders, scorpions, centipedes and other bugs.

The only region in which the south central United States was beat was the south Atlantic region, which containsthe third most likely place to get killed by an animal: Florida.
