The verse about tithing one-tenth of your income is found in Leviticus 27:30: “'A tithe of everything from the land, whether grain from the soil or fruit from the trees, belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord.” The 10% requirement specifically comes from the Hebrew translation of tithe, “עשר” or “ten”.

Tithing shows God that He has 100% of your heart.

God knows if we give back the first 10%, we've placed Him before money. Tithing tells God that He's number one in your life. Why is this so important? Very simple: God won't rest until He's number one in our lives!

Elder David A. Bednar has suggested that a few subtle blessings from paying tithing include “increased spiritual and temporal capacity … to do more with less, a keener ability to prioritize and simplify, and an enhanced ability to take proper care of the material possessions we already have acquired.”

Tithing is a way to bring God into our work and our relationship with money. To tithe means to give a certain percentage of our income to God. Of course, we can't give directly to God, so in practice, we tithe to that which inspires us to draw closer to God.

Types of Tithes

The Levitical tithe, the feast tithe, and the poor tithe were not given to the same people and provided for different needs. Each was tied to the promise that if the people were faithful to observe the tithe, God would bless them.

The Bible doesn't specifically address how often you should tithe, so there's not a strict rule you have to keep. Instead, you should figure out the tithing schedule that makes the most sense in your own life. Many people that make a point of writing out a tithe check as soon as they get paid.

Although we aren't commanded to give 10% of our earnings to God, he does expect us to be givers. Don't look at the requirement to not tithe as an opportunity to be stingy. In the Old Testament, God required Israelite farmers and herdsmen to give the tithe regardless if they were in debt or not.

Every day, we have the opportunity to participate in God's work in the world through our giving. We are co-laborers with God, which means God has a part to play and we have a part to play. The process of giving blesses us and brings Glory to God.

God promises to bless and provide for the faithful giver. In fact, God makes a dramatic promise if we obey His command to give in Malachi 3:8–11. This passage contains several key points: If we fail to bring our tithes and offerings to God, we are actually robbing Him (Malachi 3:8).

Tithing Grows Trust in God

By sacrificing 10% of your income, we learn to rely on God. While 10% might be a sizable part of some people's earnings, giving tithes means you trust that God will still provide you with enough food and wealth to live.

The Bible says The purpose of tithing is to teach you always to put God first in your lives (Deuteronomy 14:23 TLB). Tithing is a reminder that God is the supplier of everything we have. It is also God's personal invitation to an outpouring of his blessing in your life.

Malachi 3:11–12: (God says to those who bring him tithes and offerings) “I will prevent pests from devouring your crops, and the vines in your fields will not cast their fruit," says the LORD Almighty. "Then all the nations will call you blessed, for yours will be a delightful land.”
