Q:

I obtained my bees after most of the nectar flow so are needing all the help they can get in obtaining stores to get themselves through the winter. The bees are still flying on some days and are accessing the sugar syrup I offer them. Is there some time for certain that I should stop feeding them syrup?

A:

Congratulations on getting your first bees!

Once daytime temperatures drop below 57° F, stop feeding liquid syrup and switch to a solid sugar board.

Liquid syrup puts too much moisture in the colony, and the bees are unable to evaporate the excess moisture to ensure long-term storage of the syrup.

The final chapter of the Honey Bee Health Coalition publication, Best Management Practices for Hive Health: A guide for beekeepers, covers honey bee nutrition. They suggest stopping liquid feed when it reaches 50° F during the day.

FAQs

Temps are dropping. Should I change the diet for my bees? ›

Once daytime temperatures drop below 57° F, stop feeding liquid syrup and switch to a solid sugar board. Liquid syrup puts too much moisture in the colony, and the bees are unable to evaporate the excess moisture to ensure long-term storage of the syrup.

At what temperature should you stop feeding bees sugar water? ›

Q: What should I feed my bees, sugar syrup, fondant, or hard candy? A: Both liquid feed and solid feed have their place. Ideally, a solution of 2:1 syrup can be fed in the fall until the syrup itself reaches about 50°F (10°C). In colder temperatures solid feed (either fondant or hard candy) should be fed.

What is the lowest temperature bees can tolerate? ›

Honey bees keep the inside temperature of the winter cluster at about 95 degrees by exercising muscles and expending energy. A bee dies when its body temperature is 41 degrees. At 41 degrees the bee is not able to operate or flex its shivering muscles to stay warm.

How to emergency feed bees in winter? ›

The easiest DIY approach is to place a sheet of newspaper or tissue paper on the top bars above your bees, then pour a few pounds of granulated white sugar on top of the paper. The moisture of the cluster will form a crust on the sugar pile, and the bees will slowly tear through the paper and eat the sugar.

How to help bees in cold weather? ›

Providing a nectar or pollen substitute ensures your bees have the energy to stay warm and keep a thriving colony throughout the season and into the springtime. You can also offer sugar syrup or pollen patties to boost vitamins and minerals for your honey bees.

Should you feed bees sugar water in summer? ›

Do Bees Need Feeding in Summer? In most circ*mstances, you won't feed bees in summer since they are foraging available resources and making their own honey. Extreme summer temperatures or nectar dearth — a shortage of nectar-producing flowers — may require you to supplement with sugar syrup.

How do you know when to stop feeding bees? ›

Feeding can be stopped as soon as nectar is consistently available in the environment - dandelions are one of the first big nectar producers, but other flowers provide nectar too. Be aware of what is blooming in your area. Remember that you should stop feeding well before placing any supers on the hive.

What temperature kills bee brood? ›

The brood will die if the body temperature exceeds 960F. 2. Beeswax comb will start to get soft and collapse when 1040F ambient temperature is exceeded.

How to tell if a bee is cold? ›

If you spot a bee that isn't moving but is still alive, it may have gotten too cold. Gently move it into direct sunlight and let it warm up. Did you know that bees are known to sleep?

Can bees survive a cold night? ›

Without blankets, fires, or adjustable thermostats, honeybees have to stick together pretty closely to stay warm (and alive) in the winter. When temperatures in the winter drop below 50 °F (10 °C), honeybees retreat to their hives and form a winter cluster to keep warm—sort of like a giant three-month slumber party.

Can you feed bees granulated sugar in the winter? ›

You can try feeding bees granulated sugar as an emergency food source in winter. Though you should only feed bees granulated sugar in emergency situations. Bees will always take sugar syrup though and the time it takes to make syrup from your granulated sugar is worth it.

What is the best winter feed for bees? ›

If the temperatures in your area are going to be below 50°F (10°C), it is best to use fondant, sugar cakes, or granulated sugar rather than syrup. If you don't have extra honey from your own apiary to feed the bees, the next best thing is sugar syrup made from white table sugar.

What does it mean when a honey bee visits you? ›

Seeing a bee, says Honigman, could indicate potential opportunities in your professional life, whether it be a potential new business endeavor or an area wherein you could improve at work. It could also be a reminder to trust in your hard work, and you'll eventually get to enjoy the fruits of your labor.

At what temperature do bees become inactive? ›

Bee activity will stop all together if temperatures drop too low. Somewhere between 39 – 45 degrees Fahrenheit, bees will become lethargic and enter a state of dormant hibernation. If too much time passes in this temperature range, the bees will eventually starve and die off.

How do you revive a cold bee? ›

Warm sun will help “reactivate” your bee, after which she can clean herself (if she needs) much more gently and effectively than us. It's also a good idea to offer a few drops of sugar-water mix as above, if your bee doesn't take off soon after being scooped up and drying off somewhere warm.

Do you feed sugar water to bees warm or cold? ›

Pour in the sugar and stir until the sugar crystals are dissolved. Never boil the mixture after the sugar is added. The sugar can caramelise, becoming partially indigestible and toxic to the bees. The syrup must be cooled to room temperature before it is fed to the bees.

Will warm sugar water hurt bees? ›

You're safe to add the sugar after turning off the boiling water. The risk in adding in sugar while boiling is that you “could” carmelize the sugar and this is toxic to honey bees. Because of that, I suggest staying on the safe side of heating.

Can you feed bees fondant in the summer? ›

Feeding fondant in the summer/autumn will give the bees food for immediate consumption but will not encourage them to move it into the brood box to store it. Use syrup to encourage bees to draw out wax such as when carrying out a shook swarm or putting a nucleus colony into a full-sized hive.

How long does sugar water stay good for bees? ›

It's important to keep in mind that 1:1 sugar syrup can ferment quickly in the Florida heat, so it's best to portion the amount of syrup you provide to only what the bees can consume within 3-5 days. Overfeeding can lead to spoilage and may harm the colony.
