Student Appdata folder - redirect or not?
Currently have students using mandatory profiles, with only documents, etc being redirected.Updated to the latest version of Unity and they now store details in the AppData folder, which get created and deleted at logon/logoff which is causing a fair few issues.
I already have the staff Appdata folder redirected, so I am wondering if there is anything to stop me from doing the same for a small set of students who need to use unity.
What are peoples thoughts of Student Appdata folders being redirected?
Cheers

Never* redirect AppData. We moved to requiring seating plans so that apps that had per-computer configuration didn't interrupt lessons.(I've not looked at FXLogic, maybe that would change my mind?)

Adobe CC Premiere Rush seems to store chunks of important stuff in the AppData. The whole suite goes berserk if you redirect it though!Generally, as above - dont redirect.

Thanks for repliesJust checked and turned out I removed app data redirect for staff when I set them to local profiles.
Was a bit confused when I went to check and the settings wasnt applied, so I checked my notes and I changed it over 18 months ago.
Students that that use unity are taught in two different rooms over the two week timetable.
Will change those students to local profiles and see how it goes.

Plenty of subjects have constraints on where they can teach what due to technical/practical/equipment limitations.Be wary of non-standard, depreciated solutions that people come to rely upon.

I'd love to used to run full roaming profiles in the old days and the network just worked perfectly for years on end.Sadly redirecting appdata turns into a mess as there are such badly written programs that they try and store data any old where.

Roaming appdata is awful.. We are still using roaming profiles.. Looking to move away from this next half term.Causes some very long login times for some users with larger profiles, especially on a new PC they haven't used before.
Looking to move them onto Local profiles, with local documents redirected to their H:\ folder & leave appdata residing on the local profile

We use Mandatory profiles with redirected appdata, not had any severe problems with it, the odd corrupted appdata but that is easy to resolve.I am always looking to streamline our processes, is everyone just using Local profiles now, how do you manage with disk space?

There is a GPO which can remove local profiles after a certain amount of time not being logged in. Computer Config > Admin Templates > System > User Profiles > Delete User profiles older than a specified number of days on system restart.Originally Posted by Disease

We will be setting this to 30 days, so any user profile which has not been logged into after 30 days will be removed.
We will only be using this for staff accounts - students use a mandatory profile.

We have roaming profiles with appdata redirected to their home drives. Not experienced any issues with this from the days of XP up to 10.
The biggest roaming profile size I can see is 6.9MB. The smallest is 1.3MB
You can omit a lot of the stuff from roaming in user profiles via GPO in order to keep the size small: User Config > Administrative Templates > System > User Profiles > Exclude directories in roaming profile

The only size hog we have noticed with roaming AppData is the Teams folder which is consistently 500mb+.

We stopped installing Teams for this very reason. We just tell everyone to use the web version. It does everything anyway.Originally Posted by Disease

I use roaming profiles with redirected appdata. There can be some pretty large folders in there which cause slow login times. Local profiles just won't work here though so I am currently going through and finding all of the worst offending folders and trialling a GPO that excludes them from syncing in a roaming profile.
