The stock market doesn't ever need a day off but we humans do. That’s why, in addition to being closed for business every Saturday and Sunday, stock markets in the United States close each year for a set of established American holidays.
What Is A Stock Market Holiday?
In a nutshell, it is any non-weekend day when the NYSE and Nasdaq exchanges markets are closed. Typically, these are for major holidays like Thanksgiving or Christmas. Additionally, on days near a holiday (Christmas Eve, Wednesday before Thanksgiving, etc.) the bond markets may close early or be closed altogether while the stock markets stay open. Occasionally, markets will close for a day of mourning such as the passing of a former president. Finally, if a major holiday falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the markets may be closed in observance on Friday or Monday, respectively. Importantly, the stock market does not ever close for four full trading sessions in a row, barring a historic event like 9/11, after which the market remained closed for several days, for obvious humanitarian and structural reasons.

The stock market always stays open for the full trading day on the last business day of the year (whether that is December 31 or another date). That is primarily because Wall Street wants to afford the full daily session for last-minute trading activity, whether motivated by tax-trading strategies before the year-end, or other reasons.
Other than that, it is largely business as usual at the stock market, except for these ten standard annual holidays.

The bond market holiday schedule is mostly in sync with that of the stock market. However, the bond market is closely tied to the workings of both the U.S. Federal government and the banking system. As a results, on the following days, the bond market closes early, at 2:00 P.M.,ET or, if indicated, is closed all day:

When Does The Stock Market Open & Close?
When the stock market is operating on a normal daily schedule, it opens for business at 9:30 A.M. ET and closes at 4:00 P.M. ET Monday through Friday, offering 6 ½ hours of live trading on a standard trading day.
Bond Market’s Normal Hours
The bond market consists of pre-trading hours from 4:00 A.M. to 8:00 A.M. ET, regular hours from 8:00 A.M. to 5:00 P.M. ET, as well as extended trading hours from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. ET.
