What is SSH authentication? ›

The SSH key pair is used to authenticate the identity of a user or process that wants to access a remote system using the SSH protocol. The public key is used by both the user and the remote server to encrypt messages. On the remote server side, it is saved in a public key file.

SSH is primarily used for secure remote access to servers and devices, while SSL is primarily used for securing web-based communications. They use different encryption algorithms, run on different port numbers, and provide different levels of authentication and implementation.

The difference between signing keys and authentication keys is that signing keys can be used to sign Git commits and authentication keys can be used to access repositories. If you add a key as only one type, then it can be used only for that purpose, but the same key may be added for both.

SSH uses cryptography to authenticate and encrypt connections between devices. SSH also allows for tunneling, or port forwarding, which is when data packets are able to cross networks that they would not otherwise be able to cross.

Functionally SSH keys resemble passwords. They grant access and control who can access what. In identity and access management, they need similar policies, provisioning, and termination as user accounts and passwords.

Security: SSH keys provide a more secure way of logging into a server than using a password alone. Convenience: Once your SSH key is set up, you don't need to enter your credentials every time you push or pull from the repository.

From a security standpoint, using SSH-keys to authenticate a user's identity leads to greater protection of your data. Username/password authentication can often lead to security compromises, in particular, brute force attacks by hackers.
