(SPOILERS) Why did Walt want Jesse killed, then save him?

This question is about Walt's ordered hit on Jesse, why Walt left behind Jesse's gift to him (the watch), and why he ended up saving him.

I understand the first time Walt ordered a hit on Jesse: he thought Jesse was out to kill him.

I understand the second time Walt ordered Jack to kill Jesse (in the desert after Hank died): Walt felt betrayed by the seemingly only person he held a soft spot for (other than his family). Jesse did something Walt never dreamed he would do, which was spill to the DEA.

So all this time, we believe that Walt truly wants Jesse dead. We even see him leave behind the watch Jesse gave him on top of a payphone.

Then, he gets to Jack's place and saves Jesse. So my question is: why did Walt suddenly save Jesse? When did he change his mind about wanting him dead? Was it after seeing how horrible Jesse had been treated? Did his fatherly instinct resurface, and was that the reason he knocked Jesse down to save him?

Also, an additional question: How did things end between Walt and Jesse? That last nod Jesse gave Walt seemed to say that they were "good." But I don't understand how Jesse could forgive Walt after being so enraged with what he did to Brock.

Despite the countless arguments and fights, Walt cared deeply about Jesse. If you remember Mr. and Mrs. Pinkman's talk with Walt, they said he always had hope for Jesse and really tried to teach him. When Walt ordered the hit, he explicitly states he wants Jesse to go quiet, not suffering. However, Walt still had hope at that point. He was still believing Heisenberg. After he sees that Jesse was essentially a slave for months, he was angry. He told them: no suffering, no intimidation. Quick and painless. Jack and those Nazi scum made him suffer for a painful amount of time. At that point, I think Walt realized the hell he made of Jesse's life over the last few years, and wanted to gove him something to remember his old teacher by that was somewhat positive.

Walter White actually loved Jesse Pinkman. This is revealed when he says 'thanks Jesse' to yer man Flynn after Flynn has spent his own birthday nursing his hungover and beaten father in his depressing divorce condo. Heisenberg, on the other hand, only ever valued Jesse as a business asset. Saving Jesse enabled 'him' to gain some small redemption as Walter White, and once Jesse is through the gates of the concentration camp Heisenberg re-emerges to caress the shiny meth lab surfaces as he leaves the world.

Dr daeve is right. If this is a tale of hubris and of redemption, Walt's suicide mission (predicted early in season 5) must be to atone by destroying the Nazis and to redeem himself (as Walt, not Heisenberg) by saving Jesse, one the few people with hope of enough good in him to be worthy of being saved.

I'm late to the table as I just finished watching the last episode of the last series. I am so attached to all of these characters that I don't even like, I will miss them. And there is no greater compliment I can leave to all involved in making this series. But now to one thing that I have not seen mentioned- if Jessie thought the ricin was what poisoned Brock- then heard what Walt told Lydia, then he would know that Walt was innocent at least of this worst of his crimes. So I think, not knowing about the lily (which was never meant to be fatal) Jessie recognized that he had done Walt wrong in believing that. That last key look between them was a nod to their former friendship or whatever it was they had (their chemistry was the best part of this brilliant show). So I want to think that yes, Jessie will raise Brock (and, hey let's include that other poor orphan behind the ATM machine in those future pancake breakfasts) and maybe someday he will run into Flynn at a car wash and will tell him that his Dad offered to give up all his money to save Hank. That Walt did love his family even if he thrived on the game. I want to believe that. Have a A1 day.

I think Walter was an a hole, who tried to save his ass using Jesse, then he used him over again, again and again. When at some point he realises that he didn't need Jesse anymore, he stopped contacting him. But then he was almost caught so he used Jesse to get that passed. At some point Jesse became more important than Walter when Jesse decided to save Walters live instead, so the a hole had to use Jesse again to save his ass. At the end after the betrayal he tried to kill Jesse but wasn't succeed. When he started realises that his death is just a matter of time at that point he tried to get Jesse free of them and give his life back instead, after taking almost 9/10 part of it..

I really don't understand why so many people felt sorry for Jesse. He sold Walt out and Ratted to the DEA. He also taunted Walt. He was a complete loser addicted to crack who was dragged into some kind of stability. He forced the problems on Walt all along and Walt new exactly what he was doing with Brock.

Walt did exactly what he had to do.

I have to say most TV shows rarely live upto the hype and end in disappointment. This however was the best TV show I've ever watched and a fantastic ending

People feel sorry for Jesse as he was unloved and let down by his family. He was a scapegoat . He loved but was always underestimated

Bad writing. Breaking Bad was brilliant in that it depicted a sociopath awakening to his true nature. Throughout the series, Walt is given the choice of freedom (giving into his inner psychotic self) and stability (taking his friend's money and getting treatment, giving into his family). Throughout the first few seasons, Walt is given the choice between freedom and stability, essentially harking back to existentialist philosophy that you are only free through the choices you make, but be prepared to suffer the consequences of your choices. Towards the end, the writers had the choice of completing their foray into existentialist philosophy and the consequences of choosing freedom, but they bailed because they were too cowardly. I think the writers chickened out. I think they fell too much in love with the other characters like Jesse and Skylar and the crippled son. Breaking Bad should have ended with everyone dead except for Walt- the ultimate punishment to giving into the selfishness of choosing freedom.

I hated that Walt gave up Jesse to those killers! We all see what became of Jesse. He was treated like an animal..No, wait, I hope NO animals are treated like that!/ It was so awful to watch Jesse being trapped in that pit, with hardly any food, no water, no bed or even a blanket. I hated those scenes! In my mind, crazily enough, that was the maddest I ever was with Walt...

Just re binge watched the entire series, doing el Camino again next then BCS. And after watching it I definitely think Walter cared for Jesse. I don't think he anticipated being confronted with him directly prior to his car machine gun shooting happening, but he improvised and saved his life. I think Walt would have likely found and freed Jesse after ascertaining where he was and how he was imprisoned after the fact but regardless, I think once he saw Jesse and was confronted with him, his true regard and love or appreciation for Jesse would inevitably return. And Walt would save him. It's evident throughout the show that Walt has some degree of love or admiration for Jesse. Whether it was only to fill his own ego, receive praise and see his protege fulfill his potential, or if on some level Walt felt pity and obligation for Jesse because he cared. Regardless, Walt showed he genuinely cared by many actions taken throughout the show. Including paying for his rehab, running over those dealers, doing everything in his power to save Jesse, exact revenge on Tuco for him, he felt a fatherly like obligation to protect and care for Jesse, much like a father might, but his intentions were obviously not purely altruistic, but vested in self-interest. They had a complicated, nuanced relationship, but mutually cared for one another and were emotionally vested in each other. Although never expressed it to one another, Walt cared, and Jesse did too, despite all the anger, regret, ill-will involved, especially towards the end. They both betrayed one another profoundly, but ultimately let bygones be bygones and forgave each other as demonstrated by both of them refusing to kill one another and going their separate ways.

What do you think?
