Solar panels will not be able to provide your home or business with electricity during a power outage. There are, however, two exceptions to this: your system is equipped with energy storage, or you forgo the benefits of grid-tied solar and opt for an off-grid system.

If you want your solar panels working in case of a power outage, the only solution is to add a battery system. For this, there are two options: Installing an off-grid solar system or a battery-based solar system. Here is how these systems work.

How long can a solar battery power a house? In the absence of air conditioning or electric heating, a 10 kWh solar battery can independently supply essential household functions for a minimum of 24 hours, and even longer with prudent energy management.

Unfortunately, that's not the case. Solar panels don't provide backup power on their own, and when the grid goes down, all grid-tied solar systems are automatically shut off. To maintain power during an outage, you'll need to install solar battery storage or a backup generator with your solar system.

With a home battery alone, you could power your basic amenities for about a day or two in the event of a power outage. It really depends on how much energy you use in a day. It's possible for most households to limit their electrical consumption to around 5 or 6 kWh per day.

Based on this example, you should find a solar battery that is able to cover 70% of your daily power consumption – which equals to 11 kWh. In other words, you would need a battery with a storage capacity of 11 kWh to power your entire home with batteries throughout the night.
