SmarTrip® is required for travel on Metrorail and is the best way to pay when riding Metrobus and regional buses around metropolitan Washington DC.
The quickest and easiest way to get SmarTrip® is by using Apple Wallet (iPhone or Apple Watch) or Google Wallet (Android), you can purchase a new SmarTrip, add value to it, and have it ready to use in less than a minute!
Plastic SmarTrip® cards are also available to order online, but please note:
- Your order will typically be shipped the next business day via USPS first class mail. Please anticipate at least 5 business days for order delivery. Pre-Sales will ship 4-6 weeks from date of purchase.

- SmarTrip® cards purchased while you are logged into your account will be registered to your online account to give you balance protection, unless you choose otherwise.

SmarTrip® Card with 1 or 3-Day Unlimited Pass
1-Day Unlimited Pass
The 1-Day Unlimited Pass gives you Metrorail and Metrobus travel with no time restrictions. The pass is activated the first time the card is tapped and expires at the end of the operating day.
Does not include parking.
On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2.25 of fare and does not cover bus fare on regional buses including: ART, DC Circulator, CUE, DASH, Fairfax Connector, The Bus, or Ride On.
After the pass expires, new passes or value may be added to the SmarTrip® card.
The $15.50 price covers the $2.00 cost of the card plus the $13.50 pass.
3-Day Unlimited Pass
The 3-day Unlimited Pass allows unlimited Metrorail and Metrobus travel with no time restrictions. The pass is activated the first time the card is tapped and expires at the end of the third consecutive operating day.
Does not include parking.
On Metrobus Express and Airport routes, the pass covers the first $2.25 of fare and does not cover bus fare on regional buses, including ART, DC Circulator, CUE, DASH, Fairfax Connector, The Bus or Ride On.
After the pass expires, new passes or value may be added to the SmarTrip® card.
The $35.75 price covers the $2.25 cost of the card plus the $33.75 pass.

SmarTrip® Card with $8 Stored Fare Value
A permanent, rechargeable farecard that can hold up to $300 in stored value to pay fares for Metrorail, Metrobus and other participating transit agencies as well as parking fees at Metro operated facilities. The card costs $2 and comes with $8 in stored fare value for a total price of $10.
SmarTrip® Card with $28 Stored Fare Value
The card costs $2 and comes with $28 in stored fare value for a total price of $30.
