Skeleton Keys are a staple for the Borderlands franchise, and act as a shortcut to guaranteed high-tier loot. The catch? You can only acquire them through inputting specific codes given out by Gearbox through their social channels.
How Do Skeleton Keys Work?
Skeleton Keys are one-time use items that unlock the golden chest in the center of Brighthoof. The loot within, like other loot drops in the game, will be random but the loot will always be at your current level and has the tendency to be of higher loot tiers (Epic or Legendary). You can check how many Skeleton Keys you currently have by looking in your inventory, and at the bottom right of the screen you'll note a key symbol.

To redeem a key, note the code from any of Gearbox's social channels, then head to the Social page of the pause/main menu and input the code there. Then redeem the key from the Mail tab of the social page once you are in-game.
It is often a good practice to hold onto your redeemed Skeleton Keys until you reach max level to maximize your gains from each key. Whilst you can get a short-term power boost from opening the chest partway through your campaign while you are still leveling, you will inevitably, therefore, outscale the weapon relatively quickly.
