What is the significance of the shoes on the Danube Bank? ›

"The composition titled 'Shoes on the Danube Bank' gives remembrance to the 3,500 people, 800 of them Jews, who were shot into the Danube during the time of the Arrow Cross terror. The sculptor created sixty pairs of period-appropriate shoes out of iron.

Shoes on the Danube Promenade is a haunting tribute t what transpired by the banks of the Danube in history. This monument consists of 60 pairs of 1940s-style shoes, true to life in size and detail, sculpted out of iron.

If you look more closely, you see that the shoes are rusted, made of iron and set into the concrete of the embankment. They are a memorial and a monument to the Hungarian Jews who, in the winter of 1944-1945, were shot on the banks of the Danube River by the members of the Arrow Cross Party.

Sixty pairs of shoes have been sculpted out of iron and scattered along the the very edge of the river, to represent thousands of Jews who were forced to remove their shoes before being brutally shot in that place. Their bodies would fall into the cold water and be washed away from the city on the current.
