Hi All...
Looking for some answers before I begin selling on Ebay.
I am a single Mum to my Son and am currently on housing benefits, also Income Support.
Before my ex threw us out I was doing Avon but stopped that in August when I had to move over 100 miles away. I was then left with stock and can't return it to Avon. I was thinking of selling it on Ebay. Would this affect my benefits?
Also I am looking to sell things that I either do not want anymore or need...e.g old things of my Sons (money will be used to go into his savings account or to buy him things he now need.
Any advice would be great.

You can sell personal items on ebay second hand and as long as you can show that they were personal items and not bought to sell on this is fine within reasonable limits.
The Avon stock is different and will be classed as earnings so you would need to tell them plus the tax office.

We sell a lot on ebay (old baby clothes mostly plus any other unwanted stuff) and also claim housing benefit. We recently had our claim reassessed and were worried because we transfer most of our earnings into our bank account from Paypal. Before we sent in our bank statements I wrote next to all deposits that they were for things we had sold on ebay. We haven't been questioned about it, so you should be ok too. As long as you haven't purposely bought items to sell on at profit it doesn't matter.

You can sell things on ebay as long as you aren't making massive profits like say something that would total the amount of min. wage on 16hrs per week....that would certainly affect your benefits!!!
Really it should only be second hand items that you sell on their, like you would at a car boot sale.
If it is only £20.00 that you make I wouldn't worry but anything over I would phone up and ask them if it would affect and how it would affect you

so long as it a personal account and not a business account i wouldnt worry it ent like you are doing it as a company, benefits money is crap and after what your other half did to you a bit of extra cash to provide for your child is not bad, there is people out there that are conning the system left right and centre

If you're worried about the tax/benefits implications, you could sell your stuff at a boot sale in the Spring. At least then it would be all cash and there would be no record of you selling it.
Officially, I guess you are meant to declare it to the benefits people, but if you're selling a few toiletries as a one-off I'm sure you're unlikely to make a fortune so I wouldnt' worry at all.

Good idea doing a car boot will save you paying ebay fees, your only outgoings doing a car boot will be your pitch fee which will be around a fiver

How easy is it to sell stuff on Ebay?
I want to sell some stuff too and a boot sale would be perfect except for one problem - we have no car! And there's no way I can carry a bike, some furniture, bags of bits and a table on the bus!

Thank you all for your opinions. I have been in contact with the girls on the Avon (netmums) thread and asked if someone close by to me may want it. So, hopefully will hear back from someone.
It is only a one-off as I have now declared to tax people and Avon I have stopped Avon but had forgot that I had all this stock with everything going on with ex and all.
I have quite a bit of my Son things to sell, so when this snow bogs off I may think about planning a boot sale.

Try selling your items on your local netmums board or Jobs, Cars, Property, Free Classifieds and More - Gumtree.com have local boards or your local paper usually does free adverts for stuff less than £100 then it will all be in cash so no worries.
