If you are a security engineer / professional thinking of going to RSA security conference, think twice. I'm here to convince you why it's probably not worth your time and hard-earned money to attend this event. I'll probably get a lot of blow back on this. Here are my thoughts for the initiated:

Cost: Its true that a great experience cannot be measure by Cost. While that may be, if the conference was really that kind of an experience. The ticket price is like a slap in the face, and with thousands crowding the city - hotels, car rentals, and airline fares are the most expensive - expect to pay double. Uber surge pricing in effect almost always.

If you're looking for a deeper dive into cybersecurity, there are plenty of economical options that don't require leaving your living room. If being social / social interactions is your thing, then BSides, has some great minds and offer closer interactions with like minded folks at a fraction of the cost.

Networking: If you're looking for a chance to network and find new job opportunities - it's not the best place for that either. A lot of attendees are just there for the free swag and don't really contribute anything meaningful to the conversation.

Unless you want to meet all your clients/vendors in one location, there's no real value in attending RSA security conference.

Skills: While the event offers some big names and a cool set of talks, it's not like you'll be able to learn any new skills or gain access to cutting-edge cyber security technologies here. In fact, most of what you'll get at the conference is just more hype about existing products. There are better ways to get updated on the latest trends and technologies in cybersecurity.

While it's true that RSA security conference has some of the best minds in the industry, there are plenty of other resources out there - like podcasts, webinars and online courses and of course BSides - that can provide a much more comprehensive overview of all the relevant topics.

Atmosphere: It's not exactly the most dynamic atmosphere. With thousands of people in attendance, it can get pretty crowded - especially since many of the attendees are security professionals who don't necessarily have the same level of enthusiasm as those who actually work in the industry. It's like being at a family reunion where everyone is related but nobody really knows what to do with each other.

In conclusion, attending RSA security conference may offer an interesting experience but it's probably not worth your time or money, So unless you're ready to shell out a hefty sum and endure the crowds, you may want to seek out other ways of exploring cybersecurity.
