With the countdown to Christmas well and truly underway, there are plenty of festive activities to look forward to.

Christmas crafts are the ideal way to while away the hours, especially during cosy evenings spent tucked up at home. They're also a lovely way to create your own Christmas decorations and gifts, giving the holiday a truly personal touch.

Hobbycraft, the UK's largest arts and craft retailer, has revealed the top craft trends set to be popular for Christmas 2023:

Christmas wreaths are a pretty addition to any door and are a festive way to welcome guests to your home. No wonder they're as popular as ever.

In recent months, Hobbycraft has seen an increase in demand for wreaths (as well as dried flower bouquets). Pre-made wreaths can be adorned with additional touches, such as bows, baubles and dried fruit. Or, you can make your wreath completely from scratch, allowing for maximum personalisation.

Not only are there plenty of wreath-making kits available online (our favourite is from the Country Living Marketplace), but there are also a variety of places offering workshops – usually accompanied by a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie at the very least! It couldn't be simpler, with sites like ClassBento and Wecandoo making it easy to find out what's going on near you.

We think wreath-making with friends is the ultimate way to get into the festive spirit.

Although not technically one specific craft, tartan decorations are seeing a surge in popularity as people embrace the traditional Scottish print.

The pattern perfectly complements the traditional Christmas colours of red, green, gold, and white. Hobbycraft saw online sales of its Red and Green Tartan Ribbon increase by 75% in the second half of September compared to the first half, whilst tartan-themed Christmas decorations including their Red Fabric Tartan Bow saw online sales rise by 75%.

There are plenty of ways you can use tartan in your Christmas craft projects. For sewing enthusiasts, why not create tartan stockings, napkins or table runners? You can also use a large tartan bow as the finishing touch on your Christmas wreath, or smaller styles as adornments to your tree.

Year after year, Christmas baking remains ever popular. Not only is it a cosy activity, but it also promises a delicious reward. Plus, homemade bakes make a universally welcomed gift for friends and family alike.

Hobbycraft saw visits to its Christmas baking page rise by 95% in the second half of September, with online sales of popular products such as Christmas Cookie Cutters and Christmas Character Silicone Moulds rising by 100% and 54%, respectively.

If you want to put your own spin on decorative baubles, then ceramic ornaments are the way to go. Their simple, matte finish makes them the ideal base for customisation, and crafters can apply their own touch to make a stunning ornament.

Hobbycraft has seen a rise in the craft trend, with online sales of Christmas ceramic decorations – ceramic baubles, in particular – increasing by 41% in the second half of September.

Much like wreath making, decorating ceramic baubles is a lovely way to spend an evening with friends and family. You can even follow a YouTube tutorial, such as this one, which uses acrylic paints, marker pens and some with gold leaf for a beautiful finish.

Budget-friendly and a wonderful way to make use of what otherwise might be wasted, DIY paper decorations are growing in popularity.

From paper garlands to paper baubles and everything in between, there's a whole host of ornaments to be made. You can try your hand at everything from crafting origami name cards for your festive tablescape to snipping some snowflake tree decorations from leftover wrapping paper.

Paper decorations can be reused year after year if stored carefully. Or, you can recycle them once you're done.
