Responsible consumption aims to integrate social, environmental, and ethical aspects into purchasing decisions. Consumers committed to this model are informed individuals who seek to minimize the environmental footprint of their actions and have a positive impact on society.
When it comes to addressing excessive consumption, sustainable purchasing is guided by the following principles:
- Reduction: The aim is to limit consumption, while assessing the need for certain purchases.
- Energy efficiency:Consumers also seek efficient, low-consumption products that can be reused or recycled.
- Sustainability: Finally, consumers check that the components don't have a negative effect on the environment once the the item reaches its useful life.
The “use and throw away” linear economy has environmental consequences, as it creates waste. This waste decomposes in anaerobic conditions, generating methane (CH4), CO2 and other gases that contribute to global warming and, consequently, climate change. The transition from a linear to a circular economy model can mitigate these negative effects of consumption. Until now, actions to promote the circular economy in Europe have focused mainly on sustainable production and the role of companies and industries, displacing the role of consumers, who are essential in this transition towards an economic model of sustainable development.

Consuming fresh seasonal products promotes the production of food with high nutritional value, as well as the regeneration of croplands and pastures.
Purchasing local products minimizes emissions from transportation and strengthens local infrastructure.
Responsible consumption initiatives limit waste generation, opting for biodegradable packaging or packaging made from recycled materials.
Products manufactured according to the responsible consumptionprinciples are more efficient, and therefore increaseeconomic savings.

Proximity or zero-mile products avoid emissions from refrigeration or transportation and contribute to boosting the local economy. The administration can encourage local consumption by giving out discount vouchers to be redeemed at local businesses.

Promoting the use of renewable energy sourceshelps drive the energy transition and the efficient use of our natural resources. Moreover, it's important to use energy responsibly by reducing unnecessary consumption and committing to companies that apply efficiency and sustainability criteria throughout the value chain.

Using public transportation or bicycles goes beyond environmental benefits, as it contributes to improving mobility in cities and raising the citizens' quality of life index. Other sustainable mobility alternatives, such as carsharing, help reduce traffic congestion and save on private vehicle maintenance costs.

Checking the labeling of the products you're going to buy is essential to know if they're made following sustainability standards throughout the value chain. Additionally, the energy efficiency certificate assesses a building's energy characteristics.
