How to research historical stock prices? ›

If the company is no longer in existence, the share certificate itself might still have some value to a collector. Share certificates are collected by scripophily enthusiasts for their historical significance and/or for their artwork and intricate engraving.

Your local library may have print and online sources that will help you find out, in what form, and if its stock still has value. You can do a quick check on free stock market quote services, such as: Big Charts. Over the Counter Bulletin Board (OTCBB)

Predicting stock price with Moving Average (MA) technique. MA is a popular method to smooth out random movements in the stock market.

Historical prices are adjusted by a factor that is calculated when the stock begins trading ex-dividend. The amount of the dividend is subtracted from the prior day's price; that result is then divided by the prior day's price. Historical prices are subsequently multiplied by this factor.

Bloomberg: To find current and historical options prices. Type the ticker symbol of the stock you want. Hit the EQUITY key then hit GO. Type: OMON [OMON Stands for Option Monitor].

If you can't find the information you need online, then you can try calling the brokerage to see if they can provide some numbers for you. You can also look through historical stock pricing data to find the stock's average price for the day you bought it.

Financial worth: When the issuing company remains operational, and its shares remain tradable, the certificate can retain financial value. You have the option to exchange the certificate for cash by selling it to a broker or directly to the company.
