You can contact any of the three major credit bureaus to place a fraud alert on your credit file. The alert asks creditors to contact you before opening new accounts or making changes to existing ones.
Review online FTC resources. The FTC maintains an identity theft database that can be used for investigations. Also, reporting identity theft helps the FTC learn more about it and the problems it creates.
Have you received a suspicious text message? Most phone providers are part of a scheme that allows customers to report suspicious text messages for free by forwarding it to 7726.
7726 is a number all mobile customers using UK networks can text to report unwanted SMS messages or phone calls on a mobile. The number '7726' was chosen because it spells 'SPAM' on an alphanumeric phone keypad – that's a handy way of remembering it. You will not be charged for sending texts to 7726.
To report a scam text, forward it to 7726 and then send the sender's number when prompted. To report a scam call, simply text 7726 with the word 'Call' followed by the scam caller's number.
Reporting junk or spam doesn't prevent the sender from sending messages, but you can block the number to stop receiving them. To decrease incoming spam or junk messages from new numbers, you can filter them. See Filter messages from unknown senders, above.
To report a suspicious SMS text message that looks like it's supposed to be from Apple, take a screenshot of the message and email the screenshot to [email protected].
If you think you've received a political robocall or text that does not comply with the FCC's rules, you can file an informal complaint with the FCC at fcc.gov/complaints. If you are receiving texts that you didn't ask for, report the sender by forwarding the texts to 7726 (or "SPAM").
File a complaint with the FCC. If you think you're the victim of a texting scam, report it immediately to your local law enforcement agency and notify your wireless service provider and financial institutions where you have accounts.
It is generally best to file a police report on a scammer, reach out to your bank, and file a complaint with the appropriate federal agency as soon as possible after you have been scammed. To file a police report for a scam, you will need make a call to or visit the fraud division of your local police department.
