What are the cons of using Nmap? ›

One disadvantage is that Nmap natively doesn't create a map of the network. However, one option that provides a graphical representation of the network is Zenmap, the sister product that has all the functionality of Nmap but uses a GUI.

To those who haven't seen Nmap since version 5, which was released in 2009, much has changed. Nmap now comes with approximately 433 NSE scripts, 3500 fingerprints, and more IPv6 support, and yet it's still a low impact installation on most systems and a very powerful tool.

However, hackers can also use Nmap to access uncontrolled ports on a system. They can run Nmap on a targeted approach, identify vulnerabilities, and exploit them.

Comparing Nmap and Wireshark

While Nmap and Wireshark are both essential tools in the network security and analysis domain, they serve different purposes. Nmap primarily focuses on scanning and discovering network hosts and services, whereas Wireshark specializes in deep packet analysis.

Log monitoring tools such as Logwatch and Swatch can certainly help, but the reality is that system logs are only marginally effective at detecting Nmap activity. Special purpose port scan detectors are a more effective approach to detecting Nmap activity. Two common examples are PortSentry and Scanlogd.

Removing Nmap is a good idea if you are changing install methods (such as from source to RPM or vice versa) or if you are not using Nmap anymore and you care about the few megabytes of disk space it consumes. How to remove Nmap depends on how you installed it initially (see previous sections).

To counter detection, some attackers might probe for open ports over a longer time frame, in which case it becomes more difficult to detect a port scan attack. The downside for attackers, however, is that it could take hours, days or longer to find a vulnerable system.

Nmap is a powerful tool for scanning for vulnerabilities and identifying potential risks to your network. It contains a host of commands, and a versatile scripting engine with many included and downloadable scripts which can be combined into precision scanning or automated for broad results.
