Property Tax Rebate (2024)

New York City ’s homeowners contribute so much to our city’s neighborhoods, economy, and quality of life. In recognition of this, Mayor Eric Adams and the New York City Council are issuing property tax rebates in the amount of $150 to eligible homeowners.

Eligibility

The fiscal year 2023 property tax rebate is for homeowners whose New York City property is their primary residence and whose combined income is $250,000 or less.

Most recipients of the School Tax Relief (STAR) exemption or credit were automatically qualified and have already received their rebates. If you have not received a rebate, but believe you may qualify, you can submit an application. Please see the Application section for more details.

Income eligibility

Property owners with income less than $250,000: If your adjusted gross income as reported on your federal tax return (Line 11 for Form 1040) is less than $250,000, you will likely qualify for the rebate.

Property owners with income close to $250,000: Please be advised that if you reported losses on federal schedules C, D, E, or F, any losses over $3,000 will be added back to your income in the calculation for purposes of eligibility for the rebate.

Rebate issuance

Rebate checks were mailed in the summer of 2022. Homeowners with outstanding property taxes received the rebate as a credit on their property bill.

Applications

Most recipients of the STAR exemption or credit will automatically qualify and will not need to take any action in order to receive the property tax rebate.

If you are not currently receiving STAR, but believe you may qualify for the rebate, you can apply online. Applying online is the easiest way to apply, and if eligible you will receive your rebate more quickly. If you are not able to apply online, you can download and complete a paper application.

The deadline to apply was November 15, 2022. However, homeowners can continue to apply for rebates until March 15, 2023, if an extenuating circ*mstance prevented them from applying by November 15.
