Preventing Crypto? ›

Wash your hands with soap and water before and after handling or eating foods, having contact with animals or their environment, and after using the bathroom or changing a diaper. Avoid swallowing water from ponds, rivers, lakes, and even swimming pools because Crypto can survive in chlorinated water.

Nitazoxanide is a medication that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat cryptosporidiosis in people with healthy immune systems who are at least one year old. Nitazoxanide is available by prescription.

Most people with a healthy immune system don't need to be treated. Cryptosporidiosis will resolve on its own. In those who have a weak immune system, the focus of treatment is often on getting the immunity back. Otherwise, a medicine called nitazoxanide can be used to treat this parasite.

Symptoms of Crypto usually include: Watery diarrhea. Stomach cramps. Loss of appetite.

People with cryptosporidiosis should drink plenty of clear fluids (ex: water, clear juices and soups) to prevent dehydration, caused by diarrhea. Resting and eating foods that are easy to digest (ex: bananas, rice, soft crackers) will help you get better.

The following recommendations are intended to help prevent cryptosporidiosis infection ("Crypto”). Washing hands at key times; avoiding contaminated food and water, especially while traveling; and practicing safer sex and are all ways you can protect yourself from Crypto.

Boiling (Rolling boil for 1 minute) has a very high effectiveness in killing Cryptosporidium; Filtration has a high effectiveness in removing Cryptosporidium when using an absolute less than or equal to 1 micron filter (NSF Standard 53 or 58 rated “cyst reduction / removal” filter);

Probiotics have been used successfully in the treatment of acute diarrhoea and they have also been shown to limit Cryptosporidium parvum infection in animal models. The first case of successful resolution of prolonged cryptosporidiosis with probiotic treatment is reported.

Water can be filtered to remove Cryptosporidium oocysts and the cysts of another common protozoan parasite, Giardia lamblia.

Cryptosporidiosis is an illness you get from the parasite Cryptosporidium. It causes watery diarrhea that can be severe.

Symptoms of giardiasis may include: Explosive, watery, foul-smelling stools. Greasy stools that tend to float.

Some infections clear on their own, but most people need prescription antiparasitic drugs to get rid of intestinal parasites. These drugs work by paralyzing parasites, stopping their growth, or killing the parasite or its eggs.

You should pay special attention to hygiene during farm visits, washing hands after any contact with animals, and eating only in designated areas. Cryptosporidiosis is highly infectious, so you need to be very clean around your home for at least 48 hours after your symptoms stop.

Cryptosporidium is resistant to chlorine disinfection so it is tougher to kill than most disease-causing germs. The usual disinfectants, including most commonly used bleach solutions, have little effect on the parasite. An application of hydrogen peroxide seems to work best.

Currently, nitazoxanide is the only proven anti-parasitic treatment for Cryptosporidium infections. However, it is not effective in severely immunocompromised patients and there is limited data in infants. Immune reconstitution or decreased immunosuppression is critical to therapy in AIDS and transplant patients.

The host immune response to Cryptosporidium infection involves components of both the innate and adaptive immune systems. Intestinal epithelial cells provide a first line of defense, followed by the recruitment of innate immune cells such as NK cells, dendritic cells, macrophages and mast cells.

Bringing water to a rolling boil for one minute will kill most organisms, including Cryptosporidium.

Nitazoxanide (Alinia)

Nitazoxanide is the only medication approved by the FDA for the treatment for cryptosporidiosis in adults and children older than 12 months. It is administered in a 3-day, twice-daily course of tablets or oral suspension.

Soak contaminated surfaces for 20 minutes with a 3% hydrogen peroxide (99% kill rate), and then rinse them thoroughly. No disinfectant is guaranteed to be completely effective against Cryptosporidium. However, hydrogen peroxide is more effective than standard bleach solutions.

Sodium hypochlorite, peroxides, ozone, formaldehyde, and ammonia are suitable disinfectants against Cryptosporidium oocysts.
