Pokemon Scarlet and Violet have a Pokedex of up to 400 Pokemon; this means there are 400 Pokemon to shiny hunt! Shiny Pokemon have been around since Pokemon Gold and Silver, way back on the Gameboy Color. Characterized by their different color palettes, Shiny Pokemon don't offer any competitive advantage or special effects; they just look nice and are quite rare, having a 1/4096 chance of appearing. For collectors, shiny Pokemon are a gold mine of opportunity. Being able to find a shiny of your favorite Pokemon can be quite the experience!

However, there's a catch. Some shinies are harder to get than others, and this has been the case since Pokemon Gold and Silver. This rule is still in effect and it's here in spades. There are quite a lot of shinies that are hard and downright annoying to get, and here are some of the worst ones that'll leave you banging your head against the wall and begging for that elusive but alluring shiny.
10 Charcadet
Charcadet is by no means a hard Pokemon to find, or even shiny hunt - that being said, the hard part is trying to identify which one is shiny. Charcadet and its evolutions suffer from having potentially one of the worst shinies of all time, changing only the eye color and nothing else.
Charcadet is a small Pokemon, and you may not be able to identify the blue eyes of the shiny variant before it despawns.
9 Tatsugiri, Stretch Form
Tatsugiri stands out for having three vibrantly colored forms, each with its own unique shiny palette. However, this opens up the possibility of a devious trick; one of Tatsugiri's formes, the Stretch Form, is normally yellow - meanwhile, its "standard" form, the Curly Form, is a nice orange.
Tatsugiri's Stretch Form's shiny is orange as well, only distinguishable from the Curly Form thanks to its yellow stripes. However, given Tatsugiri's small size, it's quite easy to miss these stripes and think a shiny Stretch Tatsugiri is just a normal Curly one! Make sure to check every Tatsugiri you find, because you never know which one may be shiny!
8 Iron Valiant
The strongest Paradox Pokemon of Violet secures a spot on this list due to its rarity and elusiveness. Iron Valiant is unobtainable prior to completing The Way Home and, much like the other Paradox Pokemon, can only be found in Area Zero.
To make matters more complicated, Iron Valiant only spawn in one specific location inside Area Zero, though this can be alleviated with the use of Encounter powers.
7 Roaring Moon
The strongest Paradox Pokemon of Scarlet beats out its Violet counterpart for one reason; there are a lot of Dragon-type Pokemon in Area Zero. Roaring Moon shares many qualities with Iron Valiant; it can only be found in a certain cave of Area Zero, and can be drawn out with Encounter powers. That being said, your sandwich powers may bring along some unintended guests!
Pokemon like Gible, Gabite, and the Hydreigon line will be affected by Encounter: Dragon, muddying the pool of Pokemon that could be shiny. Encounter: Dark can also invite Pokemon like Weavile, the Hydreigon Line, and Murkrow - there's no escaping it! Shiny Roaring Moon will be quite a challenge to find, and you may encounter some unintended (but not unappreciated) shinies before finding your target.
6 Sprigatito, Fuecoco, and Quaxly
The three lovable starter Pokemon of Paldea are, tragically, shiny-locked. This means that no matter how many times you reset your game, your starter will never be shiny. However, this does not apply to their offspring.
This means that if you're patient enough, you can breed a shiny Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly as soon as you're able to set up picnics! Of course, just make sure you have a compatible Pokemon in your party.
5 Perrserker
Perrserker, despite not being a part of the Paldean Pokedex, makes its way into Scarlet and Violet as a gift Pokemon from Salvatore, the language arts teacher.
By taking Salvatore's classes, you can build up a raport with the man and he will eventually reward you with a Galarian Meowth. Though this Meowth cannot be shiny, you can certainly breed a shiny one.
4 Sinistea (Antique)
Sinistea is somewhat infamous for being very small and hard to spot, not helped by its limited spawning grounds. Despite this, finding a shiny Sinistea isn't too difficult with a Shiny Charm, some Sandwich powers, and a bit of patience - but wait, check the underside of your new shiny Sinistea.
Do you see a little mark on it? Sorry, your Sinistea is a phony! Sinistea possesses two cosmetic formes that don't affect its stats, but may matter to you if you want a living dex of shiny Pokemon. You better keep your eyes peeled for Sinistea - one among many may be the one you're looking for.
3 Dudunsparce (Three Segment)
After years of begging for an evolution, Dunsparce has gotten its due in Dudunsparce. Hunting a shiny Dunsparce isn't too difficult; they're easy to catch and breed, so getting a shiny one won't take long. But wait, there's a catch! Dudunsparce has two (entirely cosmetic) forms; one with two segments, and one with three. The Three Segment forme is much rarer than the Two Segment forme, having a one percent chance of resulting when Dunsparce evolves.
To make matters worse, the Three Segment Dudunsparce can't be found in the wild, meaning you can't hunt for it without rolling the dice and evolving a bunch of shiny Dunsparce. Prepare some Egg and Sparkling power sandwiches and buckle up - if you want a shiny Three Segment Dudunsparce, you are going to be here for a while.
2 Maushold (Family of Three)
The rarest shiny in Scarlet and Violet has to be Maushold - specifically, the Family of Three. While Maushold itself isn't very difficult to obtain, this particular combination of being both shiny and a rare forme makes a shiny living dex particularly hard to obtain. Much like Three-Segment Dudunsparce, you have to go through not one but two random number checks to get this Pokemon - at least with one, you can skew the odds in your favor with a sandwich and the Shiny Charm.
Maushold in particular is harder than Dudunsparce because of how hard it is to spot the difference between a shiny Maushold and a normal one. The change is very hard to spot, and if it weren't for the sparkles Shiny Pokemon emit, you'd easily miss a potential shiny!
1 Shiny-Locked Pokemon
Frustratingly, Pokemon continues its practice of shiny-locking certain Pokemon, preventing them from being shiny when encountered. While this may be against the spirit of this list, these Pokemon should be mentioned as until Pokemon decides to distribute an event of these Pokemon in their shiny formes, they will be unobtainable outside of hacking.
There are some Shiny-locked Pokemon, such as the starters and gift Pokemon, that can be bred and thus obtainable as shiny. The Shiny-locked Pokemon in Scarlet and Violet that cannot be bred, and their Shiny appearances, include:
Standard | Shiny |
