About Photinia fraseri (Fraser’s Photinia)
This fast-growing privacy shrub is called Photinia fraseri. Prized for its foliage, new growth transforms from bronzy-red to deep green with maturity. In the spring, its ovate green leaves are accompanied by clusters of tiny white flowers lasting 2-3 weeks. Its flowers, while interesting in appearance, have a musty scent. As a fast grower, growing as much as 24-36″ per year, this plant can reach an average landscape size of 8-12′ tall by 8-10′ wide.
While commonly known as Fraser’s Photonia, this variety is also known as Photinia fraseri ‘Red Robin’ and Photinia fraseri ‘Red Tip’.
How to care for Photinia fraseri
Plant Fraser’s Photinia in an area that receives full sun using well-draining or loamy soil. Water regularly after planting to establish a healthy root system then reduce frequency while maintaining regular soil moisture. Its quick growth will require annual pruning to maintain the desired shape and will additionally encourage new growth in the spring. Those who desire less flowering can regularly prune the shoot tips of new foliage which will stunt new flower growth. If planting as a privacy screen, plant each specimen 12-24″ apart to allow enough space for growth.
