How do I generate a PGP key? ›

A PGP passphrase is used to encrypt your private key, which in turn is used to encrypt your emails. The password is used to log in to your StartMail account. When you create a StartMail account, a PGP passphrase will automatically be configured for you: your PGP passphrase will be your account password.

To check the fingerprint of a key:

Select the PGP key from the list. Right click the key and select Properties. In the new dialog, select the Details tab. You can see the fingerprint of the key on the left hand side.

PGP uses the public key system in which every user has a unique encryption key known publicly and a private key that only they know. A message is encrypted when a user sends it to someone using their public key, then decrypted when the recipient opens it with their private key.

There are many key generators in the market like PUTTY, GP4win etc. and either of them can be used to create keys for SFTP, PGP, FTPS etc.

Please note if you forget your PGP passphrase, you will not be able to recover it and you will lose access to all previously encrypted files (they will be available in the list of files but you won't be able to decrypt them). In order to encrypt future files, you'll need to generate a new pair of PGP keys.

How do I find my PGP public key? ›

To search for public keys on the key server, open GPG Keychain, press ⌘F (or click the Spotlight icon to Lookup Key ). Type the email address for which you are looking for a public key and click Search . Optionally we recommend to verify public keys. This KB-article explains how to verify and sign a key.
