You need your passport or passport card to travel back from Rocky Point
WAIT:
Before we go any further, I just want you to know that I have come across the border with just a drivers license or an expired passport. The only thing I don’t know is whether when they look up my information in the system, it tells them I have a passport. You are taking a risk coming without a passport or passport card, they are cheap to get but you need to get them early. Takes about 4 weeks to get a card. Just go to the post office. They are not going to just detain you if you don’t have your passport or passport card but in some cases, they will give you a hard time and keep you at the border. Most of the time you get a slap on the wrist.

1. Determine the Type of Passport You Need
Decide whether you need a passport book or a passport card. A passport book is required for all international air travel, but if you’re driving to Rocky Point (also known as Puerto Peñasco) or taking a cruise, a passport card might suffice. However, it’s generally recommended to opt for the passport book, as it’s more versatile.
2. Gather Required Documents
You will need several documents to apply for a passport:
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship: This could be a birth certificate (original or certified copy), a previous U.S. passport (if applicable), a naturalization certificate, or a certificate of citizenship.
- Proof of Identity: This can be a current driver’s license, a government or military ID, or a previous U.S. passport.
- Passport Photo: You must provide one color photo of yourself taken within the last 6 months. The photo must meet specific requirements, so it’s often easiest to have it taken at a facility experienced with passport photos like a pharmacy or post office.
3. Complete the Passport Application
Fill out Form DS-11, the application for a U.S. passport. This form is available online on the U.S. Department of State’s website, or you can pick up a copy at a local passport acceptance facility, such as a post office or county clerk’s office.
4. Submit Your Application in Person
