What is the on-premises data gateway in Power BI? ›

The on-premises data gateway acts as a bridge to provide quick and secure data transfer between on-premises data (data that isn't in the cloud) and several Microsoft cloud services. These cloud services include Power BI, PowerApps, Power Automate, Azure Analysis Services, and Azure Logic Apps.

The personal mode is for individual use and focuses on connecting your on-premises data source to Power BI. In standard mode, the gateway also works with other Microsoft cloud services, including Power Apps, Azure Analysis Services, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate, and Microsoft Fabric.

The gateway is required whenever Power BI must access data that isn't accessible directly over the Internet. It can be installed on a server on-premises, or VM-hosted infrastructure as a service (IaaS).

Add a data source. icon, and then select Manage connections and gateways. Select New at the top of the screen to add a new data source. On the New connection screen, select On-premises, provide the Gateway cluster name you want to create the connection on, provide a Connection name, and select the Data Source Type.

The gateway has a 2-MB payload limit for write operations. The gateway has a 2-MB request limit and an 8-MB compressed data response limit for read operations.

We recommend that you install this gateway on a server that is running the data source you will be connecting to. While you can install it on a different machine, you will reduce potential network latency by having it on the same machine.
