All characteristics of living organisms, including the rate of aging and life span, are determined by a complex interplay of genetic composition and environmental influences. The common perception that longevity “runs in the family” is well supported by demographic data and studies of relatives of exceptionally long-lived people. However, the realization that a single gene can have a major impact on longevity is relatively recent. Life-extending mutations, often referred to as longevity genes, were first discovered in microscopic worms, and Dr. Andrzej Bartke’s laboratory provided evidence that they also exist in mammals. Finding such genes provides a unique opportunity for identifying molecular, cellular and organismal mechanisms of aging.
The work in Dr. Bartke’s lab focuses on how mutations affecting the production or actions of growth hormone lead to extension of the health span and a remarkable increase in longevity. Work in other labs indicates that many of Dr. Bartke’s findings in mutant mice are directly applicable to human aging. It is hoped that improved understanding of the mechanisms of aging will lead to devising interventions that can prevent or delay age-related disease, shorten period of frailty and disability, and extend life.

Wednesday Afternoon at the Movies (2:00pm; Westville Public Library, 233 S State St., WESTVILLE) The next Wednesday Afternoon at the Movies at the Westville Public Library will be October 3 at 2 PM. The film will tell the real-life story of a thwarted terrorist attack on the 15:17 train bound for Parisan attempt prevented by three courageous young Americans traveling through Europe. Pre-party starts at 5:30pm with a sunset tour of Nipper Wildlife Sanctuary. The concert starts at 7pm next door on the Sheedy Shores patio, and features music from Ben's new album The Hermit’s Spyglass. The Soap Co. Coffee House #honeycombgrill food truck will be on hand with food for sale. Evening also features silent auction, 50/50 and cash bar. In case of inclement weather the show will go on inside the winery and/or inside the Nipper Wildlife center.

Downtown Springfield Family FunFest (10:00am - 5:00pm; Washington St. Between 5th & 6th by the Old State Capitol, SPRINGFIELD) This is a downtown festival that is specifically geared towards children and families featuring inflatable obstacle courses & bounce houses, tons of games & activities, food trucks, appearances from some special characters, and a main stage packed with entertainment for the entire day including music, zoo animals, dance teams and much more! 100% of the profits of the FunFest go to support the programs of Prevent Child Abuse Illinois and their expansion across the state.

6th Annual C-U Oktoberfest (3:00pm-12:00am; big tents at the corner of Neil and Washington Streets, CHAMPAIGN) At 3:00 p.m., the 6th Annual C-U Oktoberfest begins. The event will take place from 3:00 p.m. to midnight under big tents at the corner of Neil and Washington Streets (parking lot area in front of the Orpheum Children’s Science Museum) in downtown Champaign. Champaign Mayor Deb Frank Feinen will be tapping the ceremonial first keg at 3:50 p.m. and will pronounce the official start of the community festival.
Patterned after the annual festival in Bavaria, the C-U Oktoberfest features live music from bands playing festive polkas, waltzes, and traditional German music...mixed in with plenty of your favorite songs. Bands will be playing beginning at 4:00 p.m. with Die Musikmeisters, The Polkaholics and The Bolzen Beer Band returning by popular demand from last year’s event. The Regent Ballroom will offer free polka lessons at 3:30 pm under the big tent so party-goers can be prepared when the music begins!
Beer from local brewers, including The Blind Pig, JT Walker’s, Destihl, Triptych, and Riggs, as well as traditional German beer will be served. Destihl and Chester’s BBQ will be selling a variety of food during the entire event including a variety of authentic Oktoberfest sausages, sauerkraut, German potato salad, schnitzel on a stick, half chickens and Bavarian-style pretzels!
To add to the festive atmosphere during both events, there will be steins, hats, beaded necklaces, sweatshirts and t-shirts available for purchase.
Party-goers are encouraged to get in the spirit by wearing their best dirndl or lederhosen (or coming as they are) and dance the night away!

4th Annual 5K Event for Children with Rare Genetic Disorder: Wade's 5K for 5P (7:00am; Lodge Park, MONTICELLO) an annual running and walking event that supports six-year-old Wade Jones of Monticello and other children like him. Race-day registration begins at 7:00 AM, and a shorter “Kids Fun Run” will take place after the 5K race. Wade was diagnosed at four months with a syndrome called 5P- (pronounced “five p minus” or “five p” for short), also known as cri du chat (French for “cat cry”). The syndrome is caused by a missing portion of the fifth chromosome manifesting in a variety of physical and cognitive disabilities and medical complications, and it affects approximately one in 50,000 newborns in the United States.
Proceeds from Wade’s 5K for 5P- support both Wade and the 5P- Society, a national support group for families having a member with 5P-. In addition, the organizers will dedicate a portion of the proceeds to a grant program to assist local 5P- families with therapy, medical expenses, educational needs, and other necessities.
“Our original purpose for Wade’s 5K for 5P- was to raise awareness,” said Wade’s mother, Megan Jones. “It has done way more than that. Wade’s 5K for 5P- has helped to provide needed therapies and to create a support network much bigger than we ever thought possible.”

Jeep Run for Autism (10:00am; Longbranch Tavern, 110 N Main St., ATHENS) Leaving at noon. $5 donation per person. Our spring jeep run had 71 jeeps and we raised $3,000 for autism. We will cruise around to a couple of bars and come back to the Longbranch for free food and a silent auction. We will stick to roads except to go to the Menard county fair grounds to stop in on another benefit where the jeeps will get to drive through the track. Taylorville Chilli Cookoffs (TAYLORVILLE) Entry forms are now available. The I-C-S will have 2 sanctioned chilli cookoffs once again: The “Chillinois” Regional Cookoff on Saturday, October 6th; and the Central States Regional Chilli Cookoff on Sunday, October 7th. Both days will feature salsa, verde, red chilli, and the new “homestyle” chilli competition. The Taylorville Chamber Chillifest “Little Chilli Bean” is open to infants to age 2 that live in Christian County. It's not a stage event, but rather a “People's Choice” event, with the public voting for their favorite baby by placing money in that child's jar that weekend. There is a 5-dollar entry fee per child. All children will receive a participation award, with a $100 Chamber gift certificate being given for first place, $75 for second place, and $40 for third place. Founder Debbie Yates said, “One young person said we sent him the only Christmas presents he has received. I found out that there are a ton of service men and women stationed overseas that haven't seen their family in years and some don't even get care packages from home.”
Sunday, October 7, 2018, we invite you to join our efforts to raise money to fill boxes which will be shipped to servicemen and women across the world. Spurlock Sundays: Fall in Love with Nature - Trees | Culture Lab (1:00 - 3:30pm; Spurlock Museum, 600 S Gregory Street, URBANA) This fall, we’re exploring connections between nature and culture with four month-long series of programs on water, trees, rocks and minerals, and ice and snow. We’ll look at the ways different cultures have used natural resources, explained natural phenomena, and found inspiration in the world around them. Examine artifacts, hear stories, and dig into sample materials. Experts from around town and campus will offer demonstrations and discussions. All programs are free and available on a drop-in schedule.

Each month has a distinct theme, with a series of programs for different ages and learning styles within those themes. The second Sunday of each month is our feature program of the month, Discovery Days, that will bring together a range of activities and experts for a more in-depth exploration of the month’s theme. The third Sunday of each month Artful Nature offers visitors an opportunity to create a unique project inspired by the natural world. All other Sundays are a Culture Lab with drop-in activities led by our museum guides. Join them for mini-tours, scavenger hunts, and touchable artifacts.

Monroe St., SPRINGFIELD) Join us in a prayer of praise and gratitude for the blessings of Sacred Heart Convent Chapel, for a half-century, the center of our shared life, our prayer life, and our vowed life as members of the 800-year-old Order of Preachers, the Dominicans. Pray with us as we chant the Psalms of the Hebrew Testament, so familiar to Jesus and his followers 2,000 years ago. Triumphant Quartet in Concert (7:00pm; First Christian Church, 210 S 8th St., PETERSBURG) The “Triumphant Quartet” will be in concert Monday, October 8 at 7:00p.m. at the First Christian Church of Petersburg, Illinois 210 S. Eighth St. In addition to their multiple awards, fans voted them the Fan Favorite Quartet in the Gospel Music field for the last nine years. No tickets are needed. LLCC Campus Visit Day (10:00am - 12:00pm & 5:00 - 7:00pm; LLCC Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, SPRINGFIELD) Lincoln Land Community College invites high school students and their parents, along with others interested in returning to school, to Campus Visit Day on Columbus Day, Monday, Oct. 8. The free event is being held at the LLCC Springfield campus, 5250 Shepherd Road, with two sessions scheduled, 10 a.m.-noon and 5-7 p.m.
“Campus Visit Day is a special event designed for individuals interested in starting or finishing a college degree or certificate, and families are welcome to attend,” explains LLCC President Dr. Charlotte Warren. “It is a great way to explore the academic and career programs that we offer, become more familiar with the campus and get important information on becoming a successful college student.”
Both morning and evening sessions feature presentations that include comments from current students and information on how to get started with the enrollment process and pay for college. In addition, brief tours are offered of Menard and Sangamon halls as well as the Workforce Careers Center.
Visitors can view exhibits and speak with LLCC representatives of academic programs and student services. Those unsure of which program area to study are invited to take a short career assessment. Prospective students can apply for admission and get FAFSA assistance during the event.

Pilgrimage Tomb of Post's Namesake (4:00 - 5:00pm; VFW Lafore Lock Post 755, 2211 Old Jacksonville Rd., SPRINGFIELD) VFW Post 755 was named after Private Farley Lafore Lock who was a medic during WW1. He was assigned to the 130TH Infantry which is one of the oldest regiments in the Army, tracing its roots to pre-Revolution French militia in the Northwest Territory and continuous service since. A Springfield native who was wounded in the battle of second Somme Offensive in France and died the following day. He was cited for bravery in action. Join us for a brief remembrance. Parking at the memorials and we plan to walk about 2 blocks to his marker. Driving is permitted but please allow that for those that can’t walk as parking is limited. Bring poppies or violas too. 2018 will mark the 100th anniversary of his death.

100th Anniversary Pilgramage to Pvt Farley LaFore Lock Grave (4:30pm; Oak Ridge War Memorials) On Thursday, VFW Post 755 will commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of the soldier for who the post is named, Springfield native, Private Farley Lafore Lock. His battlefield death is honored annually with a pilgramage to his grave site in Oak Ridge cemetary. This ear also marks 100 years since the end of WWI, so this ceremony will have special significance for that reason. The public is invited and encouraged to attend the ceremony.

Celebrate an evening of American Art Music with the Millikin-Decatur Symphony (7:30pm; Kirkland Fine Arts Center, DECATUR) The MDSO concert on Oct. 20 will feature all 20th century composers whose music together paints a vibrant portrait of what it means to be American. Selections include Charles Ives' "Variations on America" as well as Bernstein's overture to "Candide" and his "Symphonic Dances" from "West Side Story." From Prairie to Farm to City: Music to Commemorate Illinois’ Bicentennial (2:00 - 4:00pm; Illinois State Museum Auditorium, 502 S. Spring Street, SPRINGFIELD) Bicentennial Speaker Series presented by Phil Passen | Free and open to the public | The music in this presentation, performed by singer and hammered dulcimer player Phil Passen, reflects the story of Illinois, which has been shaped not only by its land and natural features - the prairies, lakes, and rivers - but also by the many cultures that have flourished here: those of Native Americans, French, Germans, African Americans, Latin Americans, and numerous others.
Passen will begin with a melody from a Native American tribe indigenous to Illinois. His presentation will feature songs and tunes representing various ethnic communities that have contributed to life in Illinois, including a traditional French song sung regularly only in Illinois and one other place in the U.S.; a song popular among Mexican immigrants; songs of the Underground Railroad; selections representing farmers, workers, labor struggles, disasters, and tragedies; and a few blues and rock-and-roll songs. Passen will provide commentary about the histories of the selections and the contexts in which they have been sung and played in Illinois.
This program is part of the “The Culture and Heritage of Illinoisans” series held on the third Sunday of every month through October, 2018. No, it’s Superman!” Generations of adults and kids heard that familiar line decades ago as Superman flew into their living rooms to fight for “truth, justice and the American Way.” Updated versions of Superman have been released in the past five years. But who is “The Real Man of Steel”? That question is explored during Trinity Lutheran Church and School’s Christ in the Culture pop culture series. Wrestling for a cure has partnered with many local businesses to help fight childhood cancer. Ash Street, SPRINGFIELD) Free and open to the public | Tales from the Vault presented by Erika Holst, Curator of Decorative Arts and History | In the 19th century, death was a part of life. People died from disease, lack of medical care, inadequate food supplies, poor sanitary conditions, farm accidents, fire, and war. To cope with this intimate experience with death, a variety of mourning practices and artifacts emerged that allowed people to both express their grief and to memorialize their loved ones. This presentation will explore mourning artifacts from the ISM's collection along with the etiquette behind them.
"Tales from the Vault" is a collaborative program hosted by the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum and the Illinois State Museum which allows the public to discover some of the treasures from these institutions' collections. Each program will include the chance to view an artifact or document not normally on display, commentary by a staff member or local scholar, and a chance for group discussion. The ribbon cutting will be at 4:45 and the celebration begins at 5:30 until 7:30 p.m. The event will be held at the Educational Center at 3240 Hedley Road - Suite C, Springfield. (West of Brandt Consolidated Headquarters). We invite the community to meet our educators, learn more about our free classes, devices we use, and enjoy light refreshments. A representative of the Illinois Assistive Technology Program will demonstrate some of the assistive technology devices that make life easier for the blind or visually impaired. We will have a Blind Tasting Station Experience and a demonstration of what a person sees with different visual impairments such as macular degeneration. You will have a chance to learn about the Talking Books program from our State Library.

12th annual Halloween Concerts performed by the Millikin University Percussion Ensembles (7:30pm Thursday, 6:00 & 8:00pm Friday; Haunted Albert Taylor Theatre, Shilling Hall, Millikin University, DECATUR) The legend of the Rail Girl tells of a young girl who haunts the balcony, disturbing the lights and props for any show unless the crew leaves out three pieces of candy. Over the last 12 years, the Percussion Ensemble has certainly had their share of unexplained phenomena or mysterious encounters with the Rail Girl. Some audience members have even said they witnessed the ghost appearing in the balcony during the concert.

“Haunted Lab” (5:00 - 6:30pm; LLCC, upper Sangamon Hall, 5250 Shepherd Rd., SPRINGFIELD) Children ages five and older and their parents/guardians are invited to the free event. Children will see bubbles, color changes, fire and much more as they learn about science. A Bicentennial Travel Adventure: West Central Illinois (7:30am Friday to 7:30pm Saturday; Depart from ISM Research & Collections Center, 1011 E. Ash Street, SPRINGFIELD) The Quad-Cities are a large, bi-state metropolitan area with a population of over 400,000. Among bi-state regions in the U.S., it is somewhat unique in that its population is divided almost equally between both sides. The trip will visit some key components of Quad Cities history and current character. It also will answer the questions: How did this boundary come to be? Why are there four different cities instead of one on each side? How much cross-state cooperation exists? Trip highlights include the John Deere Headquarters and Seeding Group Factory, Black Hawk State Historic Site, Rock Island Arsenal, and a lunch cruise on the Celebration Belle paddle wheel boat.
Dr. Norman Moline is Professor Emeritus of Geography at Augustana College in Rock Island. He will join the trip in the Quad Cities to serve as an educator and guide. His specialties are historical geography, cultural geography, resource management, Illinois, and East Asia. He has served two terms on Illinois Historic Sites advisory Council. At Augustana, he founded the environmental studies program and co-founded the Asian studies program. He has directed many student programs and alumni trips. He is pleased to be the guide for this trip.
Judy Wagenblast is coordinating this trip as a Society volunteer. Judy is retired from Lincoln Land Community College where she served as Director of Community Education. She has taught communications and marketing as an adjunct instructor at four other colleges and is dedicated to lifelong learning.

"House of the Dead" Haunted House (6:00 - 10:00pm, 623 6th St., PAWNEE) The Pawnee Lions Club is putting on our 2nd annual haunted house, House of the Dead. One weekend only, October 26, 27 and 28th from 6-10pm. This is a scary haunted house. Under 10 requires an adult. $5 admission. Once you enter the door to haunted house, no refunds. Mindful Meditation Fridays (11:30am - 12:00pm; Spurlock Museum, 600 S Gregory St, URBANA) The Museum invites you to join leader Mary Wolters of Green Yoga Spa in Mindful Meditation on Fridays this fall, October 26 through December 14, excluding the day after Thanksgiving, November 23. During each 30-minute session, Mary will help participants bring a focus to their breathing and share tips for how to engage mindfully. Present moment awareness can be elusive, and we often find ourselves distracted or lost in thought. Through the training and practice of mindful meditation, we can discover a calm amidst our to-do lists and more fully appreciate the gift of each day. John O'Conor (7:30pm; Kirkland Fine Arts Center, DECATUR) Irish pianist John O'Conor has been gathering wonderful reviews for his masterly playing for over 40 years. Having studied in his native Dublin, in Vienna with Dieter Weber and being tutored by the legendary Wilhelm Kempff, his unanimous 1st Prize at the International Beethoven Piano Competition in Vienna in 1973 opened the door to a career that has brought him all around the world.
His recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Sonatas led CD Review to say that he "by now should be recognized as the world's premier Beethoven interpreter" and his recent recordings of the complete Beethoven Piano Concertos with the London Symphony Orchestra and Andreas Delfs have also been greeted with acclaim.
A Steinway Artist, he is chair of the Piano Division at Shenandoah Conservatory, a member of the faculty of the Glenn Gould School at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, a visiting professor at Showa University in Japan and also continues to teach at the Royal Irish Academy of Music in Dublin.

2nd Annual Halloween Parade & other events (7:30pm; Downtown SPRINGFIELD) The Parent Place, along with presenting sponsor HSHS Medical Group, will be hosting their second annual Halloween parade downtown Springfield. This is a free family-friendly event for our community. Everyone is invited to come and watch festive floats and other exciting entries in this lighted evening parade.
The parade will kick off at 7:30 pm downtown and follow the normal parade route. Parade lineup will be in Horace Mann parking lot on Jefferson St, heading down 5th Street and continue to Monroe and up 6th Street. The Parent Place is excited to announce that this year’s grand marshals will be Molly Berendt, founder and director of Compass for Kids; and Ginny Conlee, community activist and philanthropist. National Drug Take Back Day (10:00am - 2:00pm; SPRINGFIELD) Prevention First, the Springfield Police Department, and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) will host a collection site to provide residents with an opportunity to purge their homes of potentially dangerous expired, unused, and unwanted prescription drugs. On Saturday, October 27 residents are urged to bring medications for disposal to Prevention First, 2800 Montvale, Springfield, IL. The service is free and anonymous, no questions asked.
At the Prescription Drug Take Back event last April, the DEA reported 415.5 lbs. of prescription drugs were collected by the Springfield Police Department and Prevention First in just four hours. Nationally, the last fifteen Prescription Drug Take Back events have taken nearly 5,000 tons of pills! The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2016 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 6.2 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. “Unused prescription drugs can find ways to get into the wrong hands. That can be very dangerous and even tragic. By decreasing easy access to prescription drugs, we are making steps towards keeping them out of the hands of others who might misuse and abuse them,” said Karel Homrig, Executive Director of Prevention First. “Additionally, this event gives us another opportunity to educate the public about how to prevent drug abuse before it starts.”
The drive-through collection at Prevention First is only one of five collection sites in Springfield. Those unable to travel to Prevention First’s office on October 27 can visit https://takebackday.dea.gov/ to locate a collection site convenient to them.

Food Drive (1:00 - 3:00pm; HyVee, 2115 S MacArthur Blvd., SPRINGFIELD) Hy-Vee has agreed to partner up with the Springfield Park Police in assisting the Sangamon County Sheriff’s office, Green Toyota and St. John’s College of Nursing in raising 5,000 non-perishable food items and donate those items to help alleviate the fall food shortage at local food pantries throughout the Sangamon County area. Officer Michael Wells will be in charge of coordinating the event for the Springfield Park Police. Officers in full uniform and a marked squad car will be setting up a donation table outside of Hy-Vee’s main entrance on October 27th.
All proceeds from this event will be given to the Crime Prevention Unit of the Sangamon County Sheriff’s Office at the Green Toyota dealership located on W. Wabash between October 1, 2018 And October 31, 2018. The District would like to thank Hy-Vee of Springfield for partnering and allowing us to set up our booth, plan to stop by next Saturday to visit with our Park Police and donate!
