Nvidia's GPU Mining Limiter Is Finally Beaten With 100% Unlock Tool (2024)

The cryptocurrency community has finally found a way to fully bypass the Ethereum mining limiter installed on Nvidia’s RTX 3000 graphics cards.

On Saturday, the mining provider NiceHash released a free software tool that’s capable of lifting Nvidia’s Lite Hash Rate (LHR) limiter by 100%. “We are the first to FULLY UNLOCK NVIDIA's LHR!! You're welcome,” NiceHash wrote in a tweet.

The cryptocurrency community has since confirmed that the tool does work. But there are some limitations. NiceHash’s software tool, QuickMiner, can’t achieve a full 100% unlock on the RTX 3050 and 3080 12GB graphics cards.

The other limitation is how the 100% unlock only works over the Windows OS, not on machines running Linux. In addition, the tool only supports mining with the Ethash (DaggerHashimoto) algorithm.

The big mystery is how NiceHash managed to unlock the LHR limiter. NiceHash didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment. For now, the crypto-mining provider has only teased that it was done through a “A Kind of Magic,” which links to a song from the rock band Queen.

Nvidia introduced the LHR limiter back in Feb. 2021 to discourage cryptocurrency miners from snatching up GPU supplies from consumers. The limiter works by capping the Ethereum mining rate on applicable RTX 3000 products by 50%. Still, it didn’t take long for the mining community to find ways to partially bypass the LHR limiter, and dial back the restriction to over 70%.

The 100% unlock now means cryptocurrency miners can squeeze even more profits from any LHR graphics cards they own. However, it’s doubtful the tool from NiceHash will spark a flood of new buying for Nvidia GPUs. Many miners were already buying LHR graphics cards even with the limitation in place. Since then, demand for desktop graphics cards has cooled as Ethereum is preparing to phase out GPU-based mining and when next-generation GPUs are right around the corner.

Has LHR been bypassed? ›

NVIDIA introduced LHR models in May 2021, but the algorithm was quickly bypassed by creative developers of mining tools. Eventually, LHR has been fully unlocked, which had an effect on GPU pricing, but not for too long. The LHR algorithm was a quick solution that impacted all memory intensive cryptomining workloads.

Why is GPU mining ending? ›

GPUs are less specialized than ASICs, resulting in lower efficiency. In a market that prioritizes cost-effectiveness and high performance, GPU miners may struggle to remain competitive with the specialized mining capabilities of ASIC miners.

Is Nvidia blocking mining? ›

Nvidia's software restriction to limit Ethereum mining over the RTX 3000 graphics cards is officially dead because it's now irrelevant.

Does mining affect GPU lifespan? ›

A GPU could get damaged while mining if it was running above 80°C or even 90°C for a longer period of time. This will indeed shorten the GPU lifetime.

Is it bad to buy GPU from mining? ›

As long as that isn't tampered with, physical blemishes on the heatsinks of the GPU are usually okay to ignore, especially parts that are mildly oxidised. It does not affect functionality of the GPU at all. Unless there is severe damage to the fins of the heatsink or the fans, the GPU should be fine.

Is LHR bad for GPU? ›

The 'LHR' in LHR video cards stands for Little Hash Rate. In addition to gaming, video cards are often used for crypto mining as well. Gamers often find themselves empty-handed as a result. This update makes GPU crypto mining more difficult, but it doesn't affect gaming performance.

Popular mining software company NiceHash has today released the first software that can fully unlock Nvidia's light hashrate (LHR) mining limiter on specific graphics cards, unleashing their full speed when mining crypto coin Ethereum.

Is GPU mining dead in 2024? ›

Crypto mining will still be profitable in 2024, but only if you have the right mining setup. With the dynamic nature of the cryptocurrency space and crypto mining, a GPU miner is unlikely to be among the ingredients of a profitable mining setup.

Why is GPU mining not profitable? ›

Additionally, GPU mining profitability is influenced by factors such as network difficulty, electricity costs, and cryptocurrency prices. Despite these challenges, GPU mining remains a crucial component of blockchain networks, contributing to their security, decentralization, and transaction validation process.

Is ETH mining dead? ›

How Is Ethereum Mined? It was never possible to mine Ethereum, as this is the name of the blockchain and ecosystem. Ether is the blockchain's native token. It used to be mineable, but mining was removed in 2022.

Which GPU Cannot be used for mining? ›

Nvidia has announced that it is limiting the capabilities of its latest RTX 30 series graphics cards such that they can't be used for cryptocurrency mining.

Is Nvidia better than AMD for mining? ›

AMD cards are almost always more suitable for the novice miner in terms of price, as the base of AMD mining cards cost almost 2/3 the price of its Nvidia counterpart. However, there's a tradeoff. Nvidia cards are almost always easier to use, configure and overclock (i.e. squeeze more juice out of the card).

Will mining hurt my GPU? ›

When you engage in crypto mining, your graphics card works tirelessly to solve complex algorithms and mine new coins. As a result, it generates significant heat, damaging your GPU if not correctly managed. To prevent your GPU from overheating, keeping an eye on its temperature is essential.

What happens to GPU when mining? ›

Experienced GPU miners typically reduce the power draw and underclock their GPU to make the graphics card more efficient, increasing only the memory performance.

What are the disadvantages of GPU mining? ›

The only disadvantage of GPUs is that they are significantly more expensive to acquire and maintain than standard processing units. Its efficiency and processing capabilities come at the expense of higher power consumption, faster overheating, and being much louder than traditional processors.

Why is GPU mining bad? ›

This process can damage graphics cards, making them less effective for gaming and other uses. Furthermore, mined cards are often very heavily abused, narrowing the odds of the card dying. So, if you're looking to buy a GPU in 2022, we recommend that you avoid mined ones.

Does mining damage the CPU? ›

Second, you need to be careful when mining on laptops. Laptops can't withstand rising temperatures like CPUs, and mining can cause permanent hardware damage. Users can also use benchmarking software for computer performance testing, hardware reviews, and system optimization for CPU mining.
