Network Address Translation (NAT) is a service that enables private IP networks to use the internet and cloud. NAT translates private IP addresses in an internal network to a public IP address before packets are sent to an external network.

By using NAT, devices on a private network can communicate with devices on a public network without the need for each device to have its own unique IP address. The three main NAT types are static NAT, dynamic NAT, and port address translation (PAT).

The idea of NAT is to allow multiple devices to access the Internet through a single public address. To achieve this, a private IP address must be translated into a public IP address.

How Does NAT Work? NAT works by having a firewall act as an intermediary for traffic entering and leaving the protected network. Inbound traffic is directed to a public-facing IP address, which is translated to an internal IP address to the firewall before sending the traffic on to its destination.

Unlike NAT, firewalls do not rewrite information within the packet itself. Once a packet has passed inspection successfully, it can continue on to its intended destination.
