Nellis Air Force Base, a part of the United States Air Force's Air Combat Command, is located approximately eight miles northeast of Las Vegas, Nevada. The base itself covers more than 14,000 acres, while the total land area occupied by Nellis and its restricted ranges is about 5,000 square miles. An additional 7,700 miles of airspace north and east of the restricted ranges are also available for military flight operations.

Nellis is a major focal point for advanced combat aviation training. Its mission is accomplished through an array of aircraft, including fighters, bombers, refuelers, and aircraft used for transport, close-air-support, command-and-control and combat search-and-rescue. The Nellis work force of about 14,914 military, civilians and contractorsmakes it one of the largest single employers in Southern Nevada. The total military population numbers more than 46,500, including family members and military retirees in the area.

Because of Nellis' good year-round flying weather and location, it is an ideal place for advanced combat aviation training. There are approximately 11,628 military and 3,286 civilians / contractors who work at Nellis. On average there are over 1,200 temporary duty (TDY) personnel each day at Nellis, and over 8,000 official visitors annually.

Sponsorship

Air Force Permanent Party personnel should contact your unit Commander's Support Staff for a sponsor. If you did not receive a sponsor, contact the Nellis AFB Military and Family Readiness Center for assistance; 702-652-3327 or DSN 312-682-3327.

Until you get a permanent address your mail may be forwarded to: Last Name, First Name, MI 3500 Postal Service Center (must be spelled out) Nellis AFB, NV 89191-0045. Upon arrival, pick up mail at the Postal Service Center co-located with the on base U.S. Post Office in Bldg. 320. Temporary Quarters

You can make your own arrangements for temporary lodging by calling the Lodging Office, 702-652-2711 or DSN 312-682-2711. Be sure to let the Lodging Office know if your arrival date changes and have your confirmation number handy.

Relocation Assistance

Be sure to stop by the Military and Family Readiness Center (A&FRC) for information on schools, utility companies, neighborhoods, etc. Take advantage of PCS Childcare, an Air Force Aid Society program and get 20 hours of free childcare (per child) prior to leaving your current duty station and another 20 hours (per child) at your gaining base. Upon arrival, you will be scheduled by the Military Personnel Section to attend Right Start Newcomers' Orientation for in-processing. Military Personnel will also schedule you for your finance in-processing appointment to file your travel voucher. During Right Start, newcomers will increase their knowledge of Nellis and the local community, and they can visit many agencies at the Information Fair. Critical Installation Information

Everyone at Nellis plays a vital role in molding its aerial forces into the "toughest kid on the block." The work is hard, the hours are sometimes long and the temperatures soar during summer months. Nevertheless, Nellis AFB and the Las Vegas Valley are great places to live and work. This area has some of the best entertainment and recreation in the world including fishing, water sports, and mountains which are only a short drive away. And nothing can beat the pride of being a member of the busiest air combat base in the world.

Both the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department and the North Las Vegas Police Department offer Crime Mapping websites where you can see what types of crimes may occur in areas you are considering buying or renting.

• Always be mindful of your belongings. Thieves look for opportunities in busy places with distractions such as crowds, gaming areas or retail areas.
• Be aware of your surroundings when using your cell phone in public; don't give thieves the chance to run up and steal your phone right out of your hand!
• Use authorized taxi cab stands at the airport, retail/commercial businesses or hotel resort properties. Do not accept rides from any taxi cab who randomly approaches you and only accept rides from taxi cabs that are clearly identified by official markings.

The LVMPD has a recovery rate of 75% in terms of all vehicles stolen. Most are recovered within seven days.

Besides the obvious loss of a vehicle, we all feel the effects of this crime through our insurance premiums. In 1998, auto theft cost insurance companies and consumers $200 million. Nevada currently does not mandate an insurance discount for an anti-theft device, so please check with your insurer.

ANTI-THEFT DEVICE MAY DETER THOSE THIEVES LOOKING FOR TRANSPORTATION
Each year more than a million vehicles are stolen in the United States BB about one vehicle every 30 seconds. The crime is made simple because car owners do not take some necessary precautions. Most car thieves are amateurs who steal cars for transportation, i.e., "joy riding."

DON'T BUY A STOLEN CAR--TIPS FOR YOUR PROTECTION

There are several things buyers should be aware of when making private purchases:

• Always buy a vehicle with a title.
• If it sounds too good to be true, it usually is.
• Make sure all of the paperwork matches, i.e., name, address, title information and numbers (if not, don't buy it).
• Try to verify all information you are given by the seller.
• Be cautious if the seller does not have a local address, phone number or place of employment.
• Check to make sure the public VIN plate (which is located on the drivers side dash) has not been re-painted, re-stamped or removed.
• Be aware of people who will only deal on a cash basis.
• Check all paperwork connected to the vehicle. Make sure all the numbers match.
• When selling a vehicle, always list yourself as lien holder until the vehicle is paid off. Buyers and sellers should beware of auto theft scams such as:
• When purchasing or selling any items, suggest to meet in the parking lot of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. If someone is not willing to meet there, their intentions were likely not good.

WEEKEND: This suspect looks through the newspaper for a vehicle to buy. The transaction will be conducted on a Friday night with the thief assuming the victim will not cash the check until the next business day (Monday). The suspect will give the victim a fake check using false identification. Once the suspect has possession of the vehicle, he will immediately sell it to another innocent purchaser.

TEST DRIVE SCAM: This scam involves a suspect who shows up to purchase your car and asks if he can take the vehicle for a test drive so he can show his wife and children or have a mechanic check it out. The suspect sometimes will leave a small "deposit" and fake identification. The suspect will take the car, never to return again.

LOST TITLE SCAM: In this scam a suspect will "sell or trade" his stolen vehicle and tell the victim the vehicle title is lost or stolen. The suspect promises to send away for a new title as soon as possible. The deal is consummated. After a month or two, the victim attempts to contact the "seller" only to find that the identification is false and the vehicle traded or purchased actually has been stolen.

LEASE SCAM: This scam involves a suspect who will obtain credit in the name of another person who has good credit. The suspect then goes to a local dealership to lease a high-dollar vehicle for six months or a year. The suspect, still using fake identification, then goes to another state and sells the vehicle to an innocent person. When the lease is up, the dealership will report the car stolen. Once the vehicle is recovered, it is returned to the dealership or the insurance company. Meanwhile, the innocent purchaser is out both the vehicle and the money.

Traveling from Harry Reid International Airport

If arriving at Las Vegas by civilian airlines, Nellis AFB is located about 15 miles from Harry Reid International Airport. Follow signs to Interstate 15 (I-15) North to the Craig Road exit. Go right, or east, onto Craig Road. Nellis AFB main gate is located east of Interstate 15 at the end of Craig Road.

There are numerous car rental options at Harry Reid International Airport as well as taxis at the terminals. Please ensure you are taking a marked taxicab. Upon arrival at the Main Gate of Nellis AFB, you will have to go in the Visitor’s Center to obtain a base pass for the driver.

Taking Bus from Harry Reid International Airport to Nellis AFB

Members and their families can board the Westcliff Express (WAX) Northbound at zero level and take it to the Downtown Transportation Center for a transfer to the Max (Bus #113 North). The Max would then take them to the base.

The cost for the trip is $5 one way, $7 round trip. A ticket is good for 24 hours as a day pass. The approximate travel times would be around 1 hour from the airport to the base.
