LeahPlainsong and Eventide tie together much more closely than Benediction to either of them. Eventide's main plot line is a continuation of the main plot line in Plainsong, whereas that plot is only mentioned briefly in one paragraph of Benediction. I guess I would recommend reading Plainsong and Eventide in order, but it doesn't matter if you read Benediction before or after.
MarkThere's some continuity in characters between 1 and 2, and a brief mention in 3, I don't really think so.
PamAbsolutely each book stands alone as in one book - by itself - to read. But there is a timeline and in that, a powerful 'always present' in Holt, CO, which is immensely satisfying as a trilogy of place rather than individuals.
HeatherI just finished Benediction and at first was disappointed when I discovered it wasn't about the same characters as in Plainsong & Eventide. But locale is Holt, the same plains town as in the first two, Plainsong and Eventide. Anyway, I loved all three.
Charles ShapiroI did not read them in order. I think I read Benediction first then I became curious about the beginning of the story so I ended up reading (listening) to the other books in the trilogy. I live and drive through the Great Plains, so it had a very 'I know these people could exist' type feel to it. It is not the same as the movie, Nebraska, but it is a loving portrayal of the local people, warts and all.
