In the UK, smartphones have overtaken traditional desktop computers as the most popular way to access the internet. Tech giants such as Samsung and Apple have used their smartphone hardware as a platform to encourage the use of their mobile web browsers. Each iPhone comes pre-loaded with Apple’s Safari set as its default internet browser, and consumers have become increasingly comfortable with the platform without having to seek it out themselves specifically.
Google’s role in the web
Throughout the years, Google has become increasingly vertically integrated at many levels of the tech industry. Already controlling the world’s most used search engine, the company also owns the world’s most popular web browser (Google Chrome), the world’s most popular email service (Gmail), the world’s most popular GPS mapping service (Google Maps), and has recently branched out into hardware itself, with its line of smartphones and wearable devices.
In December 2023, the Google Chrome browser was the leader in the mobile internet browser market, with a share of 65 percent. As the runner-up, Apple's Safari had a market share of nearly 25 percent. Other contenders in the field include UC Browser and Samsung Internet.
Firefox is an open-source software (just like Linux) that goes the extra mile to keep its users private online. It doesn't collect as much user data as Chrome and allows you to block trackers by default. Chrome, on the other hand, offers a fast and streamlined experience with a clear and simple interface.
As you can see, Chrome is by far the most popular browser on the planet (nearly 7 out of 10 people use Chrome), followed by Safari (with nearly 2 out of 10 people using it).
These include constant removal of features, bad coding paradigms, poor memory management, and hidden telemetry. In short, Firefox simply doesn't work that well anymore for developers or ordinary users who just want to use their browser, thank you very much.
Brave is actually far better on Android than Chrome is. Brave blocks ads and trackers, meaning it runs much more efficiently than Chrome, especially on mobile devices. Brave for Android will save you mobile data, bandwidth, and battery life compared to Chrome.
Edge collects far less data than Chrome and its tracker blocker doesn't rely on a website to do the right thing. Edge also offers more protection against malicious sites and software. Its Super Duper Secure mode event allows you to choose your level of privacy.
Both browsers are lightning-fast, and when you look at benchmark scores for loading and displaying pages, they are neck and neck. Safari is faster in some benchmarks and Chrome in others. One area where Safari has beaten Chrome comfortably in the past is memory usage.
