When buying any moped from Direct Bikes, you have to be prepared to get it both taxed and insured. You also need the right licence to ride said moped. What, though, is the tax on a moped? Let’s take a look.

Mopeds are very cheap to tax

The first thing to note is that while you likely have to pay road tax, it’s extremely affordable. Today, road tax is one of the most expensive parts of owning a car. If you own something that lacks eco and enviro-friendliness, you will likely be punished as a result. This will lead to severe financial penalties, such as high road tax and insurance.

A scooter, though, is easily one of the most affordable vehicles that you can tax. Our 50cc scooters for example are some of the most affordable to buy, to tax, and to run. The main reason why moped tax is so small is that, unlike cars, they are taxed based on their engine size. Cars are based on their CO2 emissions, which explains their higher tax brackets.

Why do I need to pay moped tax?

You aren’t the only person in the UK to pay road tax, though!

Road tax and by extension tax for your moped has been around for many years. Road tax first came to be in 1921, and was used as a means of funding the management and maintenance of the roads of the UK. This was changed, though, with road tax placed into a central development fund in 1937. It stayed that way for years, and today you are legally required to have tax.

You need to also display your tax disc so that the law can quickly verify whether or not you are in a legal tax bracket. Make sure that you always have your tax disc on display, as it will be much easier to ride your vehicle legally if you have your tax disc on display at all times.

Taxing your moped

To go through with the taxation process, the best thing that you can do is visit your local post office. In the local post office, just ask one of the clerks and they can go and find the documents that you need. You can then fill out your form and go through all of the information that you need to provide.

This can be quite a time-consuming exercise, so we recommend doing so in a comfortable place. Try and do so at home so you can keep all of your moped documents in the one place for easy viewing.

Once you do this, you need to take it back to the post office and have it sent off to the DVLA. However, we might suggest that you should do this with plenty of time to spare. The office can take time to receive and then process your tax, so it won’t happen immediately.

Is there a faster way to handle moped tax?

Yes! You could use the modern system and handle your scooter tax online. At Direct Bikes we recommend you do this as it will ensure that your tax disc is sent out to you much faster than it would be via post.

If you do this, you will be able to put the payment through online. Go online to the DVLA website, and you can just go through a few simple forms. Since the DVLA has all of your information online, you don’t need the glut of documents that you would if you were doing this via post.

This means you just need to give some basic information and the DVLA can link the tax request to you. this means that you can get everything dealt with and handled online, meaning your tax arrives sooner.

How much should I expect to pay for moped tax?

Taxation can normally be quite the expense. We recommend that you take a look at our various 50cc and 125cc scooter options. This will help you to see the cost of buying a scooter outright. However, you will be happy to know that all of our 50cc and 125cc scooters fall into the same tax bracket. This means that taxing one will cost the same as taxing the other!

At the time of writing, a full years taxation is going to cost you only £24. Compare that to what you would pay for your average car tax, and it’s a huge saving that you can make. You can pay your tax via card or via cheque. You can also pay it off in instalments should you so choose. We recommend that you just pay it all up in the one payment, though.

If you cannot, though, you can set up a DVLA Direct Debit and pay it through that way. Once you have handled payment, you should expect that tax disc to arrive in the post in a few short days.

Does this mean I can drive my Direct Bikes moped?

So, you’ve bought a brand new moped from Direct Bikes. Now you have your tax disc – is it time to get out on the road? Not so fast!

First off, you have to make sure you have two other things. One, you need the proper licence. To ride a Direct Bikes scooter, you need to have at least your CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) and your provisional moped licence. Get both of these, and you can start driving.
