Mercari, the once-beloved online marketplace for buying and selling secondhand items, is facing a serious decline in popularity and user trust. This rapid downturn stems from recent policy updates that prioritize buyers at the direct expense of sellers.
The Shift: When Buyer Protection Becomes Buyer Privilege
Historically, Mercari was a haven for secondhand deals. Its reputation was built on fairly balanced policies that aimed to protect both parties. However, recent changes have completely shifted the power dynamic. Let's dissect the two core issues:
The Backlash: Why Everyone is Upset
The predictable consequences of these changes have been swift and severe:

The Path to Redemption: It's Not Too Late
Mercari has a sliver of hope, but it involves a drastic change in direction:
Word to the Wise for Bargain Hunters and Sellers
Until Mercari addresses these critical issues, it's wise to exercise extreme caution. Buyers, be ready for less exciting selection, higher costs, and the potential for dealing with disgruntled sellers. Sellers, strongly consider alternatives to minimize your risk until positive changes are made.
Mercari might still be able to salvage its reputation, but it needs swift, decisive action prioritizing the seller experience. Failure to do so could mean the end of what was once a promising player in the secondhand market.

Not only did Mercari support a buyer who claimed an item as "not described correctly" with obvious true description, they refuse to delete that customer's negative and harmful review on my page.

Mercari's new fee policy is why they are declining! Anyone who spends money on collectibles, many of which are hundreds of dollars, need to pay too much in FEES! Ebay for me is cheaper

Jonathan, some points you may not be aware of. Mercari's return policy was for a 3 day window. So if a buyer received an item they had 3 days to return it. In that case, there's not much time to wear it or use it and then return it. I agree that the "any reason" was ridiculous. But I agree with the 3 day window return. You may not know this, but Depop too has started adding buyer fees. This seems to be a trend. Both of these ecommerce sites were small compared to the behemoths Ebay and Amazon so it appears they needed to "do something." And Depop was recently bought by Etsy, and it could be that acquisition isn't working, so it is trying "something" to pump up sales. you suggest 3 steps to redemption. There's another one -- better customer support and communications for both buyer & seller.
