Are Magura brakes worth it? ›

Overall, I am impressed with the MT5 Brakes from Magura. They match the MT7 in terms of power and performance, but they are reasonably priced. I haven't had any problems with the carbotecture material and doubt I will. A crash could say otherwise, but a crash could damage any brake lever.

Aside from the obvious difference in color, the only separation between these two MT7 models is the bite adjustment on the MT7 Raceline lever, and the hose specced on the Raceline is 200mm longer than on the Pro. Besides that, these two brakes are the exact same weight with the same reach adjust and power.

Overall this means that the MT5 is easier to set up without grinding and has a bitepoint that feels less direct than the MT7. With a higher transmission ratio, the MT7 offers overall more braking power und a more direct braking sensation. The bite point however feels slightly softer that the MT5.

Magura MT 6 and MT 8 hydraulic disc brakes are being recalled. The brakes consist of a brake lever and master cylinder that attach to the handlebars, a hose that runs between the master cylinder and the caliper which attaches to the rear wheel. The MT 6 brake system is black and silver.

Why does Magura use Magura Royal Blood mineral oil and not DOT brake fluid? Unlike brake fluid mineral oil does not age with time and therefore offers consistent performance over many years. Furthermore brake fluid absorbs water over time, which leads to a loss of heat resistance and a reduction of the boiling point.

All MAGURA brakes use low viscosity mineral oil (Royal Blood) as hydraulic medium. Contrary to DOT brake liquid it irritates human skin nor damage the paint off your frame. Biggest asset: It does not absorb water and actually lubricates the whole system.

The Magura rotors are thicker than most, that is all. The Shimano will work fine but you my find the bite-point is further in than you would like.

The Magura brand is part of a German family run company, Magenwirth Technologies. Founded in 1893 as a manufacturer of engine parts.

Magura MT6, MT7, and MT Trail brakes all use the same, HC lever compatible, master cylinder. Just pop up the thin plastic covers to access the press fit pin holding the lever in place.

Most rotors are 1.8mm thick and the thicker material here falls in line with Magura's belief that heat management is of the utmost importance in brake performance. Moving up to the master cylinder, Magura's CarboTecture helps reduce the weight offset by the thicker rotor and large caliper.

Their MT4 is a great value option that offers plenty of power for a two piston brake without breaking the bank. Next up is the MT8, which comes in both the PRO and SL configurations. The MT8 Pro bumps up the power that we saw in the MT4 and adds in a toolless reach adjust lever for more ergonomics.

New brake pads and rotors only reach their full performance during the break-in period. To bed in your pads, find an area with even ground and accelerate to a speed of 30 km/h before braking to a standstill. Repeat this process at least 30 times per brake.
