WHAT ARE LEGACY DOCUMENTS?
Legacy documents are the recorded legacy of nuclear research performed within the U.S. Department of Energy Laboratory Complex. This can include data, reports, images, drawings and more. In 2016, access to legacy documents was identified, by the advanced reactor industry, as one of the top cross-cutting needs critical to the commercialization of advanced reactor technologies.

WHERE DO I START A Legacy Document Search?
Begin your search with the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI). It collects and preserves documents developed by DOE. Search OSTI’s database first to see if your desired materials are publicly available. Visit OSTI’s website >
HOW DO I RECEIVE LEGACY DOCUMENT SUPPORT?
GAIN works with the nuclear industry to locate data or documents that the industry needs. From there, GAIN uses a tailored approach to release them to industry. This may involve scanning hard copies, updating classification reviews, collaborating with the document owner, etc. Learn more >

WHY ARE LEGACY DOCUMENTS IMPORTANT?
Many of the experimental results captured in legacy documents cannot be replicated, because the facilities that generated the original data no longer exist. By leveraging the knowledge of the past, the nuclear industry will shorten development life cycles and decrease costs.
