How many Amish return after Rumspringa? ›

During this period, parental supervision is relaxed, and teens might engage in drinking, dancing, watching TV, and even driving cars. Amish Rumspringa statistics show that most Amish teens don't go far from their family homes and that 85%-90% return.

Typically, the leaders include a bishop (servant with full powers), two or three ministers (servants of the book), and a deacon (servant to the poor). Guided by the bishop, this leadership team directs the religious life of its district.

By following the four principle values of faith, family, community, and living a simple and modest life, the Amish live out their own religious beliefs and lead a unique life in their own spiritual way.

Amish ministers and deacons are selected by lot out of a group of men nominated by the congregation. They serve for life and have no formal training. Amish bishops are similarly chosen by lot from those selected as preachers. The Old Order Amish do not work on Sunday, except to care for animals.

Another problem the Amish community faces during the Rumspringa period is unexpected pregnancy. This is most likely due to the lack of sexual education prior to the Rumspringa period.

Rumspringa. People who join the church and then leave face the prospect of shunning, so the decision to join is not to be taken lightly. Once Amish teens turn 16 and before they become church members, they can venture out into the world.

Some consider the Swartzentruber Amish to be the strictest Amish group due to their restrictive technology use. Riding in cars is permitted only in emergencies and is otherwise prohibited.

No one is "brought in" or feels he has been "called" to serve as a preacher. Rather, ministers are chosen by lot from the men in the Amish church district congregation. Deacons are chosen by lot as well, and bishops from among the ministers.

In summer, conservative Amish tend to bathe at least twice weekly to eliminate dirt and sweat. The women may bathe more frequently and keep the home clean as well. New Order Amish may bathe more frequently than the Swatzentruber order, taking advantage of running water for showers or baths.

The length of rumspringa is indeterminate, a matter of personal choice. It continues until the adolescent decides to join the church and be baptized as an adult member, accepting the responsibilities that entails. Most young adults make their decisions before age 23, the majority deciding within two years.

Rumspringa ends when a youth decides to be baptized into the church or get married, as rumspringa is often a time when youths begin to date and court their spouse.
