Honey production is deeply woven into the fabric of Ethiopian traditions. However, with the dawn of modern techniques, the way we produce honey is undergoing a transformation. Today, Ethiopia produces approximately 58,000 tons of honey annually. Although it sounds like a lot, this is just 10% of its potential. One of the significant contributors to this limitation is the predominant use of traditional beehives, accounting for over 90% of the country’s honey production. These hives yield about 7 kg of honey annually. In contrast, the adoption of modern beehives can drastically enhance this yield, reaching up to an impressive 40-50 KG per hive.

Traditional beehives, deeply rooted in indigenous practices, come with several challenges:

• Lower Annual Yield: Traditional hives produce only 5-8 kg per hive annually, a stark contrast to the potential of modern hives.
• Accessibility: These hives are often positioned high up in treetops, making regular beehive management a challenge.
• Labor-Intensity: Their placement on trees demands significant effort and is particularly challenging for women, given their societal roles in household duties and child-rearing.
• Hive Inspection and Feeding: Traditional hives make it tough to inspect or introduce feeding systems, often resulting in a lost colony after honey harvest.
