Kauai, Hawaii vs. The Big Island – What is the Difference? (2024)

There’s no doubt that Hawaii is filled with picture-perfect destinations on every island, but which one should you visit on your next getaway? Many people choose to visit the island of Hawaii itself, often called “The Big Island.” However, Kauai is a popular destination as well. What are the differences, and why might you choose one spot over the other?

Here’s everything you’ll want to know when you’re looking into The Big Island or Kauai beach vacation rentals.

Kauai, Hawaii vs. The Big Island – What is the Difference? (1)

About The Big Island

While “Hawaii” refers to the island state as a whole, it’s also the name of the biggest island within the state. It’s often thought that Oahu is the biggest, but that’s not the case! Many refer to the island of Hawaii as “The Big Island,” as it holds almost 190,000 inhabitants throughout its 4,000 square miles. The Big Island is the most diverse of the eight islands and is particularly known for its black and green sand beaches, lava fields, and incredible jungle.

Things to Do

One of the most well-known things to do on The Big Island is the famous Hawaii Volcano National Park, perfect for getting a taste of authentic Hawaiian nature. There are 5 volcanos total on this island, and with 11 of the 13 global climate zones, there’s always something to experience. If you’re looking for an outdoor vacation, you really can’t go wrong with any Hawaiian island, but The Big Island is easily the most diverse in this aspect. The Big Island also hosts tons of events throughout the year, like the Merrie Monarch Festival around Easter and the Ironman competition in the fall.

Attractions

Hikers and nature lovers will find plenty of paths throughout The Big Island. The Waipio Valley has trails for any skill level that will provide a simply unmatched view. Pololu Valley and Kahena Beaches have incredible black sand that you’ll have to see to believe, or you can head to Papakolea Beach to check out the green sand! You can also spot the Kona coffee plantations for a look at how the iconic drink is made. If you want to snorkel, you’ll find a great experience at the Mauna Lani Private Beach and throughout the island.

Atmosphere

The Big Island is one of the most populated islands of Hawaii, and the atmosphere shows it. There’s a lot to do, but you’re likely to run into crowds no matter where you go. Life is more fast paced here, and you’ll undoubtedly pass a luxury resort on just about every corner. There’s lots to see and do, so you won’t be bored, but all the attractions can seem overwhelming if you’re just looking to relax. However, the people are always friendly, and you’ll get an authentic Hawaiian experience.

About Kauai

Kauai has plenty of fun facts. It is often called “The Garden Isle” thanks to its incredibly lush surroundings. It’s much smaller than The Big Island with only about one-third of the population, meaning your attractions will be much less crowded and you can actually enjoy your vacation. Hikers flock to Kauai from all over the world, and nature lovers will feel right at home. Kauai is the ultimate destination if you want to get up close and personal with your surroundings.

Things to Do

Kauai is best known for its breathtaking nature. There’s stunning scenery around every corner, and the amazing flora and fauna make for insane photo ops. If you want to stay active or try a new hobby, you can take to the world-class hiking trails that take you through fascinating cliffs and valleys. There are also plenty of secluded beaches and rivers to explore, giving you the perfect spot for a private and romantic afternoon. Any outdoor activity you could think of, you’ll find on Kauai!

Attractions

If you’re in Kauai, you can’t miss out on Waimea Canyon, often called the Grand Canyon of the Pacific. You’ll also want to check out Mount Waialeale, one of the world’s wettest places with its record rainfall at almost 700 inches! Kauai is also perfect if you’re a surfer or want to try the hobby for the first time. Hanalei is ideal for learning to surf, since the waves are just the right size for beginners. You can also spend your days boogie boarding or body surfing. On The Big Island, there’s virtually no opportunity for surfing.

Atmosphere

Kauai is much more laid-back and rural than The Big Island. You won’t find the huge crowds, so you can really get away from it all and enjoy your days in Hawaii. The locals are incredibly welcoming and can point you toward the best hidden spots, so you’ll get a unique experience. Life is slower on Kauai, and that’s definitely a good thing if you want a relaxing getaway. You can bask in the nature around you and take advantage of the constant opportunities to explore.

How Does Kauai Compare to Other Hawaiian Islands?

Every island of Hawaii makes for a great vacation, but they all offer something different. Kauai has lots of rich history compared to the other islands since it’s the oldest. It’s also the smallest of the Hawaiian islands and feels less developed than spots like Maui or Oahu, though there are resort areas on the south and east shores and near the north of the island. Kauai can often get more rain than many of the other islands, so it’s recommended that you visit in the summertime or early Fall.

Cost Between The Big Island and Kauai

You can certainly travel on a budget whether you choose The Big Island or Kauai. The Big Island boasts some of the most affordable accommodations, gas, and shopping, but you’ll be staying in big-name hotel chains instead of the more personalized and attentive local options. Kauai also offers affordability in all of these factors, but attractions are also cheaper than you’d find on The Big Island. You can book a helicopter flight for around $150 or a whale watching trip for $70. Expect to pay more than you’re used to for food on either island, but in terms of the standard Hawaiian food prices, both islands are reasonable.

Which One is For You?

Every destination in Hawaii can lead to an incredible vacation. If you’re planning a trip to Hawaii, you’re probably looking for tons of rest and relaxation. In Kauai, you can achieve that thanks to the lesser crowds and the abundance of incredible nature. The Big Island can become crowded and overwhelming, which doesn’t lend itself well to the relaxing getaway you’re dreaming of.
