Is AAAS membership worth it? ›

Membership Makes a Difference

Your membership helps AAAS be a strong advocate for science funding and policy, and remain a leader on today's critical science issues, climate change, energy policy, STEM education, vaccines, and space exploration.

Is my Membership fee tax deductible? Member dues paid in excess of $74 are tax deductible as a charitable contribution. For example: If you paid $25 for your Membership, none of it is tax deductible. If you paid $95, then $21 is tax deductible.

The AAAS Fellowship, recognizing scientifically or socially distinguished efforts to advance science or its applications, is one of the most prestigious honors a U.S. scientist can receive. Fellows are elected by their academic peers.

We anticipate an acceptance rate of approximately 20%.

Check with your accountant to find out if your AAA Membership is tax deductible. It may be tax deductible in certain cases, such as if you drive your vehicle for business.

Dues you pay to professional, business, and civic organizations are deductible business expenses, as long as the organization's main purpose is not to provide entertainment facilities to members.

For example, an amount paid for therapy to treat a diagnosed mental illness is a medical expense, but an amount paid for marital counseling is not.

Fellows have included Thomas Edison, W.E.B DuBois, Maria Mitchell, Steven Chu, Ellen Ochoa and Irwin M. Jacobs. Election as an AAAS Fellow is a lifetime honor and all Fellows are expected to meet the commonly held standards of professional ethics and scientific integrity.

How much do AAAS Fellows make? ›

Receive a stipend of $75,000-100,000 per year, plus other support including health insurance, professional development, and targeted fellowship travel and training.

Fellows are nominated by AAAS' 24 disciplinary sections, three Fellows who are current AAAS members, or by the CEO of AAAS. The 2023 class of AAAS Fellows includes 502 scientists, engineers, and innovators from around the world spanning scientific disciplines.
