Is VBA about to become extinct? Investigating the Fall in Popularity of Visual Basic for Applications

VBA is a programming language that is integrated with Microsoft Office applications such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint. It enables users to automate activities, implement custom functions, and create apps within the Office environment. However, VBA's popularity has been waning in recent years, and many are concerned about its future.

VBA's decline might be linked to a variety of things. For starters, VBA is an old technology that hasn't been upgraded in years. It was initially introduced with the release of Excel 5.0 in 1993, and there have been minimal improvements to the language since then. As a result, VBA has failed to keep up with the fast changing technological scene, and many developers are seeking more current languages.

Second, the rise of alternative languages and platforms has led to VBA's demise. Python, for example, has grown in popularity as a data analysis and automation language, and its simplicity and versatility make it a great contender to replace VBA. Other platforms, including as Google Sheets and Airtable, provide significant automation features that compete with VBA.

Third, the shift to cloud-based apps has undermined VBA's utility. VBA is not supported by cloud-based applications because it is built for desktop applications. The necessity for VBA is decreasing as more enterprises migrate to the cloud.

Despite these challenges, VBA continues to have a large user base and is a crucial tool for many enterprises. However, VBA's supremacy is clearly fading, and developers are increasingly opting for more current languages and platforms.

Microsoft has been investing in new tools and languages to replace VBA in response to this trend. Power Automate, a cloud-based automation platform that connects with Microsoft Office products, is one such solution. Power Automate enables users to automate processes and create unique workflows without using VBA.

Office Scripts, a new scripting language designed to replace VBA, is another option. Office Scripts is a cloud-based programming environment that is more accessible and user-friendly than VBA.

Finally, the demise of VBA can be ascribed to old technology, the rise of alternative languages and platforms, and the shift to cloud-based applications. While VBA retains a sizable user base, its supremacy is clearly diminishing, and developers are increasingly opting for more modern options. Microsoft's investment in new tools and languages, such as Power Automate and Office Scripts, demonstrates the company's awareness of this trend and dedication to giving developers with the tools they need to stay ahead of the curve.

The answer is no, this has been an argument forever. MS wants to dump it for the more Profitable Power Automate. The issue is PowerBI users want MS to add VBA to it. Even though it has Rust and Python support. People want VBA for it, I do alot of Automation VBA, VBscripting, there are VBA users out there that developed wrappers for VBA to do OpenCL. I am making a program that connects to an chatGPT, and connects VBA/VBscripts to do automation on the fly. They say VBA is only for automating office products, Google chrome is not office, but I did some automation with VBA because the Web portal has no API and I had to make 30 reports. Python, I have watched videos of users with different models for GPT and there were conflicting environment setups or he had to chase down the imports. VB solutions work right out of the box, although MS does not develop for it anymore, there are users still adding features to it. When I have to transfer data directly into an Excel I use VBA as the Power Query is slow.
