The Mint released its Maya Angelou Quarter rolls and bags for sale to the public on February 23, 2022, at Noon Eastern time. The Mint sold out of its inventory within 5 minutes, processing enrollment orders, online orders, and phone orders on the day of release. In addition, the following Maya Angelou quarters were for sale.
- 100-Coin Bag from the Philadelphia Mint – $40.00
- 100-Coin Bag from the Denver Mint – $40.00
- Two-Roll Set (40-coins per roll) from Denver and Philadelphia Mint – $36.00
- Three-Roll Set (40-coins per roll) from Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mint – $54.00
According to the U.S. Mint’s latest production report, the Maya Angelo Quarter production is shown below. (Once you get to the report page, type Maya Angelou into the search box in the upper righthand corner of the report and click Enter. You can then see the results.)

It is important to note that the production numbers above are only for the official mint retail packaged roll and bags. On January 10, the U.S. Mint started shipping millions of the Maya Angelou quarters to the Federal reserve from the Philadelphia and Denver mints. See theCoin Worldarticle here. So where are the San Francisco minted Angelo quarters?
The 2022-S Maya Angelou quarters minted in San Francisco are produced in two different finishes, proof and business-strike, with the latter usually intended as a circulation finish. The proof quarters will include both the clad and silver coins. The clad quarters are 91.67% copper and 8.33% nickel, while the silver coins are 99.9% silver. American Women Quarters struck in proof condition are made for collectors only and not for circulation.
The San Francisco Mint also produced Angelou quarters in business strike, but none were released into general circulation as far as I can tell. It appears that the S-Mint quarters were made for collectors only. Here is another interesting observation, there are no images of business-strike San Francisco quarters in the Mint’s American Women Quarters image library? Was this by design or just an omission?
Look at the production numbers for the “three-roll set” above; only 7,582 roll sets were minted. Multiply 7,582 rolls by 40 coins, and you get 303,280Maya Angelou quartersdated 2022-S. The production of the general circulation Angelou Philadelphia and Denver quarters is sure to be in the tens of millions.
I would imagine the San Francisco mint will make a few more production runs. Still, if it stays consistent with the first batch, the 2022-S Maya Angelou quarter may end up being a Key Date for the American Women Quarters Program, with prices already skyrocketing on eBay at the time of this post.
