Is it a good idea to take all honors classes in 9th grade? (2024)

I'm currently an 8th grader gearing up for high school and the guidance counselor has suggested I could take an all honors class load. Is it common for freshmen to do this and does it pay off in the long run for college admissions, or is it better to ease into high school with a mix of regular and honors courses?

Enrolling in all honors courses as a freshman can certainly showcase your commitment to an academically rigorous schedule, which is something colleges always view favorably. Additionally, if your schools offerings AP or IB classes later on in high school, taking advanced courses now will help prepare you to succeed when you eventually take them.

However, it's essential to strike a balance to ensure you can maintain high grades and also have time to get involved in extracurricular activities, which are crucial for college admissions.
