Invasion Games (Indoor, Outdoor & Aquatic) (1)

Invasion Games Description

(Reference: “Developing Game Sense” by Breed and Spittle)

  • An invasion game has two teams of five or more players
  • The aim of an invasion game is to score more than the opposition, either by propelling a ball through a goal area or target or by running the ball over an end zone. This is done by throwing, striking or kicking the ball.
  • The team with the ball invades the opposition’s space in front of goal in order to score. Therefore, they must create space to move and attack.
  • The team without the ball must prevent scoring by occupying or denying space. They aim to protect their goals and win possession of the ball.

Strategies common to all invasion games

The aim of an invasion game is to score more than the opposition by:

  1. Winning possession of the ball
  2. Keeping possession of the ball
  3. Creating space and moving into space to receive passes.
  4. Create scoring opportunities
  5. Prevent opposition from scoring by denying space and applying pressure to win the ball back

Critical Thinking

  • Where should you run? Where should you pass the ball?
  • What type of pass was best to use? (E.g. short/long)
  • Where was the easiest place on court to turn over the ball?
  • Why did you run there? How should you pass the ball?
  • How did you work as a team to gain as many turnovers as possible?
  • Which team tried to create space? Which team tried to block space?
  • How can you relate each game to invasion sports?
  • Using tactical examples how are hockey and football similar?
  • What tactics or strategies do all invasion games have in common?
  • How do you think rules in games have changed over the years?
  • How can you show that you are ready to receive a pass?
  • What type of passes could you use to evade opponents?
  • Why might communication help your teammates increase effectiveness in invasion games?
  • What strategies would you use to reduce your opponent’s chances of intercepting a pass?
  • Where should you run to reduce your opponent’s chances of intercepting a pass?
  • A great “transition” looks like?
  • What is the most effective way to defend space?
  • What is the most effective way to invade space?
  • Reflect on “Moving into an open space”

TIME (When to…)

  • When to run
  • When to pass
  • When to shoot

SPACE (Where to…)

  • Where to run (To create space for team)
  • Where to run (To create a passing option)

RISK (What to do…)

  • Which option to take (Pass, shoot, run or dribble)
  • Where to pass
  • The option chosen should take into account the probability or success (E.g. Making the pass or shot) And the score or stage of the game

Execution (How to…)

  • How to pass, dribble or shoot
  • This is the technical component of decision making
  • Easily measurable based on the outcome, E.g. Does the team keep possession/score?

Sequencing
