Infamy is a mechanic in Vic2, each wargoal will cost infamy. There is no limit to how much infamy you can accumulate at once, yet if you have over 25.00 infamy, other nations will get a containment CB on you. In DoD, infamy works a little differently.
Changes from the vanilla game[]
There are a few changes to infamy that are not in the vanilla game, here are those changes:
- Greater Infamy Reduction - in the early game you will notice that you will lose -0.30 infamy per year (Base of -0.10 + -0.20 modifier, this modifier becomes -0.40 if you are a GP). Because the world of DoD is so much more different and disconnected than our own, there is no international code, this means that the theaters of war will all stay rather disconnected, yet it does mean that there are no watchful eyes on your back. Further into the game, after one of a list of events occurs, every nation will lose this bonus infamy reduction, these events include, but are not limited to:
- Formation of Russia
- Formation of the Danubian Confederation
- Formation of Aragon-Italy
- Formation of the Elbian Federation
- Formation of the Holy Roman Empire
- England/France reaches GP status
- The Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth centralises
- New Wargoal - another change to infamy is the introduction of new wargoals, this being the addition of the 'Conquer Capital' CB. In the base game you are unable to take a nations capital without a conquest CB, which can be given by event, or made using justification, which only works if the target nation has one state.
Navigating Infamy[]
There are no set strategies for dealing with infamy, but there are a few ways to lower your infamy or avoid worrying about it:
- Early Game Rushing - this involves taking out the nations you intend to conquer in the early years of the game while you still have the infamy reduction, before slowing your conquests greatly in the mid and late game when you no longer have the reduction modifier. This works if you are conquering civilised nations, it's also good if you're playing outside of Europe and still want to take part in the Scramble for Africa.
- Releasing Colonial Nations - if you plan on taking over Europe as a European nation after building up for a while, opt to conquer as much of Africa as you can before you do. Going for nations in the Congo work best, as there are many of them and each one will give you -2.00 infamy when you release it as a puppet. Make sure you don't release a nation that will have almost all of your colonised portions of Africa though, this will usually have upwards of 100 provinces and will make it impossible to reduce your infamy via releasing more nations.
- Infamy is Just a Number - this strategy works really well if you want nothing more than war and conquest, this means being in endless conflict with everyone around you as soon as you pass over 25 Infamy. Unfortunately each nation will have a perpetual CB on you, meaning that you'll have to use your military might to keep your nation together. This is hard, but perhaps the most rewarding strategy.
